Project Summary

The Global status report on road safety 2018, launched by WHO in December 2018, highlights that the number of annual road traffic deaths has reached 1.35 million. Road traffic injuries are now the leading killer of people aged 5-29 years. Close to one fourth of the people involved in accidents are motorcyclists. The main cause of death in two-wheeler drivers is over speeding and careless driving. Numerous lives could have been saved if emergency medical service could get accident information and reach in time to the scene. Up to 75% of all deaths occur within the first one hour of impact. Thus, in this crucial phase of time, if proper aid reaches the victims, mortality rates can be reduced. In today’s era, especially in the young generation, the craze of motorbikes is remarkable. As the bikers in our country are increasing, the road mishaps are also increasing day by day, due to which many deaths occur, most of them are caused due to most common negligence of not wearing the helmets, also many deaths occur due to lack of prompt medical attention needed by the injured person. Drastic action is needed to put these measures in place to meet any future global target that might be set and save lives. This motivates us to think about making a system which ensures the safety of biker, by making it necessary to wear helmet, as per government guidelines, also to get proper and prompt medical attention, after meeting with an accident. To overcome these problems, a SMART HELMET is proposed having a control system built inside a helmet. Smart Helmet for Motorcyclist is a project undertaken to increase the rate of road safety among motorcyclists. The idea is obtained after knowing that the increasing number of fatal road accidents over the years is cause for concern among motorcyclists. The project is expected to improve safety and reduce accidents, especially fatal to the motorcyclist.

Project Objectives

The major goal of our project is accident detection, notification and prevention. This helmet makes rider to feel comfortable as well as with high protection and security. Most of the accidents are due to rash driving, using mobile phones while driving, violating traffic rules and regulations. Many people lose their lives because of the late reporting of accident (i.e.) they could not able to track accurate GPS location of the accident area. Sometimes we are unable to inform about accident at the right time. The primary reason why many people get head injury is because of not wearing helmet. The main cause of death in 2-wheeler drivers is over speeding and careless driving. So, the main objective of this project is to reduce accidents in such ways:

People get informed about their relative's accident at the spot via text message which shows full detail about the accident location. And helps the victim to reach hospital as soon as possible as message will also send to the nearest hospital or ambulance so victim will also take emergency treatment.

It minimizes the usage of mobile phones as much as possible while riding. People now a day's calls/message each other while riding which is very dangerous. So SMART HELMET provides you to take calls if it is emergency using inbuilt handsfree.

It also helps people by displaying google maps on inbuilt heads-up display which easily navigate your way without using mobile phones.

Another objective of this project is video recording while you are riding which is very helpful for documentary purpose and for accident proofs.

It helps people by indicating break lights which attracts people and are so prominent that people must notice this. 

Project Implementation Method

The designing of our SMART HELMET hardware requires many modules to make it work perfectly. Following hardware modules are used:

Pressure sensor/vibration sensor, Gyroscope & accelerometer sensor GY-521 MPU6050, TFT IPS display 1.44”, Zero-cam fisheye camera, Headphones with microphone, GPS/ location over wi-fi and GSM sim800L/twillio/NEXMO application, Raspberry pi zero W, Batteries, Helmet, Raspberry pi 3 model B+.

This smart helmet works on raspberry pi zero-W controller which is WIFI based, acts as a station for the networking system. The helmet is interfaced with the cloud via raspberry pi zero-W in which videos are stored and can easily retrieved from cloud. Sensors will send signal to raspberry pi zero-W. Thus the notification will be send through GSM/GPS or to the receivers and locates the exact position in terms of Google map. GSM/GPS will send messages to those receivers whose contacts are recorded in database.

All sensors are implemented in such a way that as the accident occurs, Pressure sensor/vibration sensor and Gyroscope & accelerometer sensor GY-521 MPU6050 are activated and will triggered together and send signal to raspberry pi zero-w then GPS/location over Wi-Fi and GSM sim800L/twillio/NEXMO will be activated & will send the message alert to the respective contacts. Your mobile phones will be interfaced with HELMET via BLUETOOTH. Therefore, your calls will be transferred to the HELMET to talk with headphones. So, this smart helmet includes inbuilt headphones to receive/dial calls. Smart display is also implemented in such a way that it will display google map to navigate your way and will show your mobile notification and numbers of your callers. There will be an inbuilt camera which will record the videos later with the help of wi-fi your videos will be sync or uploaded to the google drive which helps you to retrieve them whenever you want. The helmet will be voice controlled using Google assistant.  Backlight will also be embedded in this helmet which will be enabled when the speed of gyroscope & accelerometer slows down. This over all circuit will work with 2 parallel li-ion batteries.

Benefits of the Project

There are lots of benefits of this project. This project is made to reduces all security threats while riding 2-wheeler vehicle like motorcycles. If any accident occurs and get any injury so you will be given urgent treatment by nearest hospital as nearest hospital and ambulance will be informed about your location and ambulance will come at your exact location. Your relatives will also be informed without any struggle or people around you finding your mobile for contact. The main benefit you will get from this project that you don’t have need to use your mobile while riding. If someone calls you so, you are not supposed to stop your bike or take out your mobile from pocket to pick up the call. The only thing you must do is just press a button on HELMET.

There is main benefit for journalist or documentarian that they can easily record videos while riding with using your mobiles or external cameras. Recorded videos will also help as a proof in accidents issues. You will also be able to retrieve or access your videos which are sync by google drive easily whenever you want.

You can also see your caller name and number without seeing your mobile and You will also get map navigation of your way without using your mobile physically and there is a heads-up display which helps you in finding your ways. This feature is very beneficial for those bikers whose only job is serving people at their door step like UBER, CAREEM, BYKEA, FOODPANDA, EATMUBARAK, TCS servers etc.

In case your bike's break light is not working so this SMART HELMET will work and indicate by backlights when break is applied. This is another feature from this you will get benefit.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final deliverable project which you will get at the end is a SMART HELMET which serves different features at a time in a single HELMET. Over all circuit in which several modules and applications (raspberry pi zero-w, GPS, NEXMO app, gyroscope & accelerometer sensor, pressure sensor, camera, headphones, backlights and TFT heads-up display are connected is embedded in one small wearable device. Many main features are present in this one SMART HELMET. There is no need of taking several different devices for different purposes separately with you. It will make your ride easier and will reduce fatal deaths occurred in a road accident while you are riding. this HELMET is physically same as other helmets but the only difference is in the features which are only present in our SMART HELMET. it will be presented in a cool form that people will definitely attract towards this SMART HELMET. camera, headphones and backlights will be embedded inside the helmet but only TFT heads-up display will be connected outside the HELMET which will make ease to see the display.
