The IOT concept provides the basic infrastructure and opportunities to form a connection between the physical world and computer based systems. The concept has been gaining importance with more and more wireless devices that are increasing rapidly in the market.The ESP 8266 Wi-Fi module used in the system provides the connectivity with the internet in the system. Now-a-days the demand for electricity is increasing at a constant rate in the population and is being utilized for various purposes viz, agriculture, industries, household purposes, hospitals etc. So, it is becoming more and more complicated to handle the electricity maintenance and requirements. Therefore there is an immediate requirement to save as much electricity as possible. As the demand from the newer generations of population for electricity is increasing so in along with it the technology improvement is needed. The proposed system provides a technical twist to the normal energy meters using the IOT technology. Also there are other issues that we have to address such as power theft which in turn generate economic loss to the nation. Monitoring, Optimized power usage and reduction of power wastage are the major objectives that lie ahead for a better system.
This project deals with hourly energy consumption values acquired from the energy provider. These standard values help energy utilities and consumers to know their energy consumption which is reported on an hourly basis. In fact, behavior of the consumers can be studied and results obtained can help the consumers in changing their behavior, in particular when correlated with a potentially varying price. This work explains a gap between the consumers and energy utilities so that they can communicate more efficiently through the implementation of conservation strategies. The consumers need to be educated with broader knowledge regarding the meter so that wrong perceptions can be altered. A case study is conducted on the standard data obtained for sixteen sets of households. The variation in change of the usage has been well understood and determined. The research work can also help users to think intelligently when using their power. Moreover, daily patterns for the complete day on hourly basis are examined. Future savings which consists in determining when to use which appliance can be done by using prediction models and flattening techniques.
We will be implementing IOT(internet of things) in our project to remotely control and analyze the power consumption. Transformer will be used to step down from 220/12v.An LCD will be used to display the consumed voltage/energy by using Ardunio UNO (ATMEGA 328) and 7805 IC. GSM Module (Sim900) will be used for remote operation by sms service of energy meter. Wifi Module (ESP 8266) will be used for Load switching and net usage details.
Smart meters provide data that enable customers to make choices about how much energy they use by allowing them to access accurate real-time information about their electricity consumption. Unlike the old meters they replace, smart meters are up to date two-way, digital communication systems that record electricity usage every 24 hours and automatically send this data to a customer's electricity distributor, virtually bringing an end to estimated bills and manual meter readings. Taking up the option of new, flexible electricity pricing, connecting or disconnecting electricity, switching to a new electricity retailer, are cheaper and easier with a smart meter. Customers no longer need to wait for their next scheduled meter reading, making services like this quicker and cheaper.
The proposed system has two sections mainly, one is Home Section and another one is Electrical Base Station (EB). Wireless electric power management and control system for short distance is developed using IOT. This system monitors the load, monitoring means calculating the power consumed exactly by the user at a given time. Energy utilized and the corresponding amount will displayed on LCD continuously and communicated to the controlling base station. The feedback from the user helps in identifying and controlling the power theft. An SMS containing monthly bill along with the due date is sent to the respective meter owner using GSM module which is present in the EB section. This module also helps in alerting the authorized people through an SMS during the power theft and exceeding power consumption.
