Biogas Production Potential of Textile Industry effluent, Opportunities and Challenges
Pakistan is facing a natural gas shortage that is hurting its export industry. Biogas is a mixture of gases, primarily methane (CH4), which can replace natural gas consumption. At present, biogas can be produced from agriculture and municipal solid waste. Also, it can be produced by the treatment of industrial waste. Considering these facts, our final year students intend to investigate and determine the biogas potential of textile industry effluent using an anaerobic digestion process. This project could help the textile industry meet its energy demands by processing their waste. The project is also extendable at a large scale based on the experimental results.
a) Physicochemical characterization of textile industry effluent.
b) Treatment of textile industry effluent using an anaerobic digestion process for biogas production.
c) Investigation of the factors influencing biogas production
d) Optimization of the parameters that can increase the biogas yield.
Mainly the implementation will be done step by step:
1) Collection of waste
2) Characterization of waste to estimate the biogas potential
3) Segregation of waste to get more biogas output.
4) anaerobic digestion batch-test performance.
5) Kinetic modelling for large scale implementation.
a) The project can transform hazardous waste into useful bioenergy.
b) Minimize waste from the environment.
c) Reduce fossil fuel consumption and at the same time reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
d) Also, anaerobic digestion is a cost-effective process that can treat the waste stream at a large scale and reduce carbon footprints.
d) Promote bioenergy production from indigenous resources that can reduce the burden of natural gas improts.
e) Have positive impacts on the economy.
Technically, anaerobic digestion is a biological process that is induced by microorganisms. The bacteria convert the organic waste into biogas and biofertilizer. Biogas can be upgraded to methane and used for household purposes, vehicle fuel and to run power plants. Biofertilizers can be used on lands for cultivation, which can reduce the demand for chemical fertilizers. The project is technically feasible as Pakistan is an agricultural country facing an energy shortfall along with economic turmoil. This can help to overcome these issues simultaneously.
