Indoor Navigation using Augmented Reality

Project Area of Specialization

Augmented and Virtual Reality

Project Summary

Due to the ever-increasing popularity of mobile devices, Location-based services can be easily created and used to interact with the areas around us. Mobile devices with cameras can be used to navigate through areas using virtual or augmented reality; where an image is captured through the camera, and then overlaid with information to help a user to navigate.

We are going to make a mobile application for indoor navigation that allows user to navigate inside the building easily. Our target users are mostly new comers & those person who are not well aware of the paths & directions inside the building. The technology that will be used in this project in AR. AR is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information. Augmented reality is the technology that expands our physical world, adding layers of digital information onto it. Unlike VR, AR does not create the whole artificial environments to replace real with a virtual one. AR appears in direct view of an existing environment and adds sounds, videos, and graphics to it.

In Large Organizations it’s very difficult for an individual especially for a newcomer to find a particular place (department, offices etc.). A person could lost inside unknown buildings. Even when a person is in an absolute rush and don’t know the building very well he/she can get into some serious trouble. For example miss a flight at the airport. Kids often lost in malls while parents are looking for them or a person could find a specific shop in a mall. A person who is late for the office meeting & unable to find the room where meeting is being held. A new comer at university is unable to find his/her class room. An interviewer unable to find the panel where interviews being held. Relatives of a patient who went to meet their loved ones unable to find the ward No. Someone could get hurt because they were unable to leave the building in an emergency situation on time. A university library in examination weeks where a few students want to meet in order to study for their exams. Problem of ?nding your peers in a user friendly manner with modern hardware. These are some problems our project was focused to solve on.

Project Objectives

  • The objective of this project is to guide the newcomer to navigate easily and safely in a building. Newcomer will get familiar with indoor environment
  • The second objective is to create a system that works for different indoor buildings by creating map and feed to the system.
  • The third objective is to make an indoor system in low cost.

Project Implementation Method

We have gathered maximum details and requirements, also check feasibility report related to Indoor Navigation System Using Augmented Reality. For this we are using Waterfall methodology. Because all the requirements we take from client at a time no further involvement of client so waterfall is best option for us. Sequential Phases in Waterfall Model

Requirements: The first phase involves understanding what need to be design and what is its function, purpose etc. Here, the specifications of the input and output or the final product are studied and marked. System Design: The requirement specifications from first phase are studied in this phase and system design is prepared. System Design helps in specifying hardware and system requirements and also helps in defining overall system architecture. The software code to be written in the next stage is created now. Implementation: With inputs from system design, the system is first developed in small programs called units, which are integrated in the next phase. Each unit is developed and tested for its functionality which is referred to as Unit Testing. Integration and Testing: All the units developed in the implementation phase are integrated into a system after testing of each unit. The software designed, needs to go through constant software testing to find out if there are any flaw or errors. Testing is done so that the client does not face any problem during the installation of the software. Deployment of System: Once the functional and non-functional testing is done, the product is deployed in the customer environment or released into the market. Maintenance: This step occurs after installation, and involves making modifications to the system or an individual component to alter attributes or improve performance. These modifications arise either due to change requests initiated by the customer, or defects uncovered during live use of the system. Client is provided with regular maintenance and support for the developed software.

All these phases are cascaded to each other in which progress is seen as flowing steadily downwards (like a waterfall) through the phases. The next phase is started only after the defined set of goals are achieved for previous phase and it is signed off, so the name “Waterfall Model“.

Benefits of the Project

Indoor Navigation helps save lots of time, stress and money. It has given people freedom to choose their route and explore their surroundings & to navigate around big buildings and find Points of Interest on their own, without asking people or always searching for signs. From a business point of view, the benefits are obvious as well. Customers will feel more at ease when they can rely on a tool that shows them the path conveniently. This helps an organization create an atmosphere where customers will like to spend more time in, which may also lead to increased sales. The application could also benefit clients who install the system by learning user behaviors and targeting advertisements at specific locations.

Major Industries can took benefit from Indoor Navigation App.

These Major industries/Local & commercial Areas or customers to whom Indoor Navigation App would be quite beneficial includes Medical /Health centers, Doctors, Nursing staff, Patients, Shopping Malls & the people who are roaming inside mall or a supermarket, seeing cute stuff, asking about the prices of things, but are still unaware of the where about of some of the desired items, doing chit-chat with friends, restaurants owners & staff & also for people having lunch together at eateries, Museums & tourist, who are often unfamiliar of a new place could use INS to have a better experience if they could navigate confidently without any assistance in museums, exhibitions and art galleries etc., tourists which are quite beneficial for the economy of a government.

One of the biggest benefit of INS is to save you from panic attack. Some people lack sense of orientation & they could easily be lost inside building so individual don’t need to get panic if he/she has been stuck or lost inside a building as they with the help of INS they could easily identify the place where they are & call for an immediate help. It is also beneficial for the conventional centers or offices & for the business owners, Zoo & especially for those families who enjoy their outings, Parks, Parking Lots, Resorts, Hotels & their guests who usually doesn’t know the routes could get additional benefits, Warehouses, etc. power plants could benefit from INS

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our Indoor Navigation System will be implemented on Android. So the output of the project will be delivered through an android application to the user. The application will be deployed on the playstore. So user can download it from there also user can download an APK file from google and use the services of indoor navigation. The application will provide better usability for the user to use the output effectively.

  • User presses the navigation button and provides the details for sources and destination. Application will navigate the user from source to destination.
  • There will be an option of map that will show the whole map of building with details.
  • There will be an option of details of surroundings. So if user opens up the camera from application and place toward any place ,the details of that place will be shown on real time.
