To design automotive occupant package for Pakistan
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryModern-day transportation for the masses is under constant research and development, one such research is occupant packaging.
The drawings/3D representations of an occupant in the interior of a vehicle including different reference points, like the seating reference point and accelerator heel point, that dictates the positioning of basic vehicle controls, like a steering wheel and gear lever, as well as the supportive body, like mirrors and centre counsel, is known as an occupant package[1].
Occupant packaging is an important part of designing a vehicle. The safety, comfort, and accommodation of the occupants are of a growing concern for automotive manufacturers and thus invest heavily in this area. Many companies/countries design specific packages for specific areas where the population ergonomics are roughly the same.
Pakistan, on the other hand, uses packages that are designed for other populations, by taking the anthropometric measurements of the said population, that have vastly different body types, sizes, and ergonomics. As a result, many people in Pakistan face problems regarding the interior layout and seating design, whether it be reachability to some features or general comfort for long rides.
Therefore, designing an occupant package by taking anthropometric measurements of individuals in a sample population of the Pakistani population will pave the way to a more comfortable and safe experience while driving or being driven for the masses.
Project Objectives- To collect anthropometric measurements of a sample population.
- To take averages of the different data taken and to do statistical analysis of the data and calculate percentiles select % percentile to achieve.
- To design a 2D CAD model of the package according to collected data.
- To design a 3D model of a manikin in CATIA for sitting posture.
a) Identifying a sample population to take data from
b) Selecting 200 individuals with age of 18 or above.
c) Taking anthropometric measurements of the individuals
d) Tabulating the data obtained
e) Applying statistical methods on the data collected
f) Using CAD to model a 2D drawing with reach and visibility limits
g) Using CATIA to model 3D representation of the package
h) Reviewing the model for mistakes
i) Comparing with existing models of different populations
j) Summarizing and evaluating the findings
k) Writing a report for the research
Benefits of the ProjectAcademic Contribution
This research will make us more familiar with the aspects of anthropometric measurements, taking data from a sample population, evaluating the data collected, and making CAD models to support the data as well as analysing the CAD Model in CATIA for sitting posture.
Contribution to Community
The research will allow us to suggest a seating position that will fulfill the needs of the anthropometric population of Pakistan. Which will increase the comfort level as well as the safety level of the drivers of an automotive vehicle.
Significance
This research will be the first of its kind, in Pakistan, to make a significant contribution in the designing aspect of automotive occupant packages and will generate data that can be used for different ergonomic researches and fulfill a gap of knowledge present in the automotive industry.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableWhen the project is carried out successfully, the result will be an occupant package that is suited for the Pakistani population.
Anthropometric measurements of a sample population will become available for future projects.
2D and 3D designs of the package will allow for easy implementation in future projects.
