Project Title

Waste Management System

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Improper management of solid waste is a threat to inhabitants. It is a big challenge all over the world for human beings. The problem of solid waste management is a main concern in the urban areas. Recycling is very much underrated in our country; however it is an important factor in conserving the resources. If thought in a broader way recycling can boost a country’s economy, helps in creating opportunities in the recycling and manufacturing industries.

Manual sorting of materials is inefficient and need more man power to work effectively so a smart sorting system on a ground level is the solution to this problem which can be used in offices, schools, universities or hotels etc.

Project Objectives

The ultimate goal is 'sustainable materials management', it is necessary to introduce the concept of clean waste. The concept is to build a system that can identify a few materials which will further assist in recycling can specifically divided into following phase wise milestones;

  1. Designing the structure of the waste sorting system.

  2. Conveyor Belt designing and interfacing.

  3. Programming and interfacing the components of the system.

  4. Android application designing for monitoring

Project Implementation Method

It involves a software and hardware combination, and is based on a suitable microcontroller. To achieve the targeted objectives, we use sensors that respond differently to different material types, and propose an algorithm for sorting the wastes on the basis of their type, e.g. metal, glass, plastic or paper etc.

Benefits of the Project
  1. It is an efficient way to reuse material effectively over its lifespan.

  2. Working towards minimizing, reusing, recycling, and prolonging the lifespan of products.

  3. It will help in significant reduction of waste disposal problems.

  4. It will assist in further recycling process.
