Design of a GaN HEMT Based single phase inverter
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThe increase in tariff rates imposes a big burden on the local electricity consumers of Pakistan. This invokes a demand of an efficient alternative energy production resource that can cater the energy needs of the consumer in an affordable cost. All alternative energy resources requires inverters to convert the energy to usable form.
Currently, all the commercially available inverters are fabricated using silicon-based semiconductor devices. However, silicon-based MOSFET being a mature technology, has by now reached its theoretical limits, and further improvement is hardly possible. Wide band-gap semiconductor devices such as GaN HEMT in its initial stages of development have already surpassed the performance of silicon-based MOSFETs. Thus the GaN HEMT can be operated at the higher switching frequency and reduced size.
We can use GaN HEMT technology in different devices to get high efficiency and high power density. A GaN HEMT device based single-phase inverter with high switching frequency is proposed to evaluate the advantages of GaN power transistors in this project. GaN HEMT devices in inverter design have not been fully explored by researchers, and the purpose of this project is to evaluate the high-efficiency capabilities of inverters that can be achieved using new GaN HEMT technology.

Hardware implementation of the simulated inverter
An inverter is a circuit which converts a DC power into an AC power at desired output voltage and frequency. There are different control methodologies that can be used to implement a single-phase inverter. The DC voltages are fed from a renewable energy source and the output obtained from the inverter can be used to operate the AC load.
Implementation of a single-phase inverter that produces a symmetric AC output voltage of desired magnitude and frequency consists of the following major blocks:
1. DC link capacitor design
2. Design of switching circuit based on GaN
3. Cooling system
4. Output filter design
5. Hardware implementation design
6. Performance evaluation
- High performance with high efficiency inverter.
- Compact and smart inverter design.
