Building a secure, collaborative smart online voting system that offers the fairness and anonymity of participants involved in the decision making, while preventing rigging and electoral fraud has been a challenge for a long time. Crypto-currencies and their foundation technology, the blockchain, is presented as a game changer for many of the existing and emerging technologies because of its distinct feature allowing a decentralized approach and enabling trusted applications without the dependency of a middleman. It is reshaping various business domains and has its high use case in identity management/voting. Online Voting System, a blockchain-based poll management and smart decision-making system that offers enhanced security, reliability, immutability and decentralized approach providing fairness and anonymity of participant involved in the polling and decision-making. As per our survey , currently in Pakistan there is no proper polling system for online vote casting, and all decision-making procedures are either handled manually which in the end create drastic problems. This document is about Online Voting System which is an automated polling system, dedicated for people publicly for voting that is built upon Ethereum blockchain where one can collaboratively make decision regarding the issues, making fair decision preventing rigging and electronic fraud and minimizing the wastage of resources. we can consider it for secure public election/democratic voting which is a serious issue in any country.

Project Objectives

Our goal is to present the implementation of a decentralized internet voting protocol with maximum voter privacy and identity management using Blockchain technology which is a secure, digital immutable public ledger that is widely distributed and peer-validated. The objective of the online voting system project is to design a polling/voting system on blockchain for our country so that a better decision or action can be made regarding any activity or issue happening in the country. Our aim is to make a system incorporating all features of the voting system in a user-friendly environment in which all stakeholders can be a part of all activities and decisions by casting votes without showing their identity.

Project Implementation Method

The major motivation behind working on this project is that it is based on blockchain which is an emerging technology. From the internet of information to the internet of value, blockchain is shaking all other existing technologies. The proposed application will provide a solution to the real-world problems which our country are facing because there is no way to create a polling station for voters where voter can see where his/her vote going and it not changable . No such application regarding automating the voting system in the right now. Online voting system is a research based project which was borne to changes. We developed the idea from the inception phase and gradually added details to its design and solution based on our own research, surveys and feedback received from publicly people or voters. So working on this mega project was a major challenge for us.

Benefits of the Project

To deal with mentioned problems we need to find a secure, confidential, tamper proof & the latest way to automate the polling/voting and decision-making process. Blockchain is one of the emerging technologies in today's world and a lot of revolution and research has just begun regarding this distributed technology providing decentralization, immutability, high security and improved traceability approach to develop applications for various domains. It has its use cases in various business domains and e-vote is one of them. So taking it as a base we are proposing a Blockchain based Polling System for the country. Our system will be developed as a web-based platform where voters can cast there vote to the desire party. It will save voters resources as well. Blockchain based polling systems will improve trust, reliability and convenience. Through this system, encrypted votes on blockchain will be reliably counted, while ensuring voter’s privacy. Once the result has been locked in the blockchain, nobody can tamper it, no unauthorized person can access it and the confidential poll result would be displayed to the concerned persons.

Crypto-currencies technology is presented for many of the existing and emerging technologies because of its immutability, consensus, enhanced security and decentralized approach. Blockchain is a creative amalgamation of many old concepts, technologies and methodologies. Initially, blockchain was only bound to crypto currencies but now it allows to build decentralized applications using smart contracts that are deployed on Ethereum. It provides business opportunities in various domains and has been gaining popularity for transaction and identity management. Online Voting System is a web application that is mainly built on the Ethereum blockchain. It will automate the previously used manual system of handling voting and decision-making process for our country people casting there votes.

In this chapter, we will discuss the opportunity that we see in this proposed idea and what are the needs of involved stakeholders that we are targeting. We will discuss the motivational factors involved with this proposed solution and challenges that we are likely to face while implementing this solution. The rest of this chapter will then focus on the goals and objectives of our project and explain the proposed solution and outline the report content.
