Proximity Based Attendance and Tracking System
Since smartphones have gained so much importance in our lives that they have become an inseparable part of our everyday routine, this project aims to develop a software that works within a close proximity while using a smartphone and a QR code respectively. The Proximity API works with events that provide information related to distance between a device and an object (physical or abstract) as measured by the proximity sensor.
The approach that we’ve chosen for this project is a student-centric approach which will help in providing a layer of certainty regarding the student’s attendance record. We will use the Proximity API with a corresponding QR code (quick response code) which will work together.
A QR code will be generated from a smartphone, which will work only to a limited proximity, the QR code will have an expiry session which can be altered (depending on the user’s preferences) and also, each QR code will belong to a
class/category. Other users can scan this QR code using their smartphones which will authenticate them respectively to their available data.
In our implementation case, a QR code is generated from a teacher’s smartphone, the code will then be displayed on a medium using a projector or any alternative tool. Students only within a close proximity to this generated QR code can scan this code using their smartphones which will authenticate them and will mark their attendance. Students outside this proximity would not be able to scan this code.
The teacher can also set the QR code for a specific time thus, once this time is over, the students scanning the QR code won’t work.
Since each QR code belongs to a class/category, the generated QR code will only work for each respective class that represents a department. Therefore, a code that’s generated for students belonging to FICT department will only work for FICT department.
Thus, each Faculty/Department/Class will generate its own code.
Moreover, we’re using Google Beacons. Beacons will be installed in each class to synchronize students (app) with the system. The teacher will broadcast attendance request through the beacon.
The Beacon will able to distinguish student request from the teacher request.
