Project Summary

Oil skimmer are the cheapest and most efficient way to remove surface oil in ocean ,washing machines and leakage oils from coolant machinery etc. A belt and disc skimmers are great in many ways. The capacity is high and oil collection rate is excellent oil skimmer is easy to install. Oil skimmer is effective tool for removing dirt oil from water. A oil skimmer achieve the desired level of water purity. In more demanding situation oil skimming is a cost reducing means of removing most of the oil before using costly treatments such as chemical process. The skimming principle, upon which the technique relies, is depend on three physical properties of oils, namely specific gravity, surface tension, and affinity.

 The main purpose of this fabricated skimmer is to purify the water from various dirt oils. The skimmer is more cost efficient and simple in design in comparing to costly treatments like membrane filters and chemical treatments. The oil is removed from the metal disc and belt through wiping blades. The floating grease or oil has formed into solid mats our apparatus can be used to break the mats and remove them. This will reduce water pollution.

Project Objectives

a)To analyse the several oil spilling around world and their harmful effects.

b) Our Project aims to increase efficiency(Recovery Rate) by 15-20%.

c) Using solar panel as power source to improve energy efficiency

Project Implementation Method

We have done our research part after which we have decided to use the following technology to make this project. We are going to implement this idea at a low level. After successful completion anyone can make it on a larger scale.

 First of all, we implemented our research in making prototypes. We  industriesworked on both angled as well as vertical positions of belt and shafts and decided to go with the vertical apparatus as we got better results.   We worked our calculations to find torque and rpm and accordingly decided to get a high torque motor powered by 12V battery charged by solar panel.

Next we will move towards fabrication unit which we can use in some industries such as sugar industry as well as petroleum industries. This project enables us to filter low density fluids mixed with high density fluids.

Benefits of the Project

There are various types of problems which are created by the spill of oil. Among them, most remarkable effects are described below broadly ,our project aims to solve all these problems:

a)Environmental effects:

First of these is the environmental effect. The animal life that lives in the water or near the shore are the ones most affected by the spill. In most cases, the oil simply chokes the animals to death. Others that live face a number of other problems. In many cases, oil penetrates into the structure of the plumage of birds and the fur of mammals, reducing its insulating ability, and making them more vulnerable to temperature fluctuations and much less buoyant in the water.

b)Human effects:

An oil spill represents an immediate fire hazard. The Kuwaiti oil fires produced air pollution that caused respiratory distress. The Deep-water Horizon explosion killed eleven oil rig workers. The fire resulting from the Lac-magnetic derailment killed 47 and destroyed half of the town's center.

Spilled oil can also contaminate drinking water supplies. For example, in 2013 two different oil spills contaminated water supplies for 300,000 in Miri, Malaysia; 80,000 people in Coca Ecuador,.In 2000, springs were contaminated by an oil spill in Clark County, Kentucky.

c) Effect on Economy:

Another major effect of the oil spill is seen on the economy. When precious crude oil or refined petroleum is lost, it effects the amount of petroleum and gas available for use. This means more barrels have to be imported from other countries. Then comes the process of cleaning the oil spill, which requires a lot of financing. Although the company responsible for the oil spills and their effects has to clean it up, there is a lot of government help required at this point.

d) Effect on Tourism Industry :

The local tourism industry suffers a huge setback as most of the tourists stay away from such places. Dead birds, sticky oil and huge tarballs become common sight. Due to this, various activities such as sailing, swimming, rafting, fishing, parachute gliding cannot be performed. Industries that rely on sea water to carry on their day to day activities halt their operations till it gets cleaned.

One of the biggest oil spills seen in history happened during Gulf war when approximate 240 to 336 million gallons of crude oil flowed into the Persian Gulf. It was considered one of the worst disasters, beating the Ixtoc 1 Oil spill in Mexico.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The working of oil skimmer depends upon density difference between oil and water. The density of the oil is less than the density of the water. Hence when oil is mixed with water the oil floats on the surface of the water. It is rectangular frame when the motor is starts rotated with reduced speed with reduced speed & belt start rotates. The belt is immersed in the contaminated water dust particles stick to the belt and scrapped oil is collected and the process is repeated. When the force is given to a shaft, the belt rotates over a Head shaft which is mounted on the shaft due to density. These oil sticks to the belt due to its oiliness property. The quantity of oil sticked to the belt is more because water has less oiliness property than oil. A scraper collects oil from moving belts and it is moved to the collected chamber thus process oil gets separated from coolant.
This returns up to 90% of the coolant in skimmed liquid and sends only waste oil in trash, saving tremendous cost due to almost full coolant recovery. A different set of experiments has been conducted by using the various oil and different materials of the belt to calculate oil recovery rate, oil recovery efficiency after separation. This project work discuss clearly about the oil separation.
