Amongst all the countries around the world, Pakistan has the most glaciers than almost anywhere on the earth, despite that facing a severe water problem with poor water management system. Recently, the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) warned that the country will run out of water by 2025. Political issues in Pakistan, immensely affects the growth of infrastructures in terms of dams, management and other water reservoirs, so increasing the importance of water management system.

Due to the rapid growth of the population, several problems have raised such as water scarcity and shortage. These problems have been increasing swiftly, affecting the home users, agricultural lands and industrial sectors. The traditional approach of pumping underground water through pumps, tube-well, petter engine etc. contains no proper water management. Therefore, the unnecessary use and waste of water reduces the level of underground water gradually. The future need is to utilize water resources efficiently with water management system. New method of IoT based water management system must be deployed to manage the use of water

On the grounds, evolvement in technology enhances distinctive methods, observing the economical points in perception. Internet of Things (IoT) is a system composed with several branches of mechanical, electrical, computing devices and wireless technologies that can be employed to achieve the water management system requirements. The water pump and pump station can be regularized through Multi-Resource Control System (MRCS), which is an innovative technique. The electro-pump controller, water level in reservoir and alarm control system are comprised as the integral section of the MRCS. Additionally, a 4-state switch will be designed which helps in operating the system manually, automatically, using IoT method and in Off state. This hierarchy will be driven by an IoT technology, directed by the SMS, Wi-fi or ringtone which will be accessible from anywhere and at any time. The water management system through MRCS using IoT technique may be considered as one of the best ways in controlling the wastage of water significantly.

  • To develop a system adequate of managing the unnecessary usage of water.
  • To develop such a system which will aid in minimizing the use of different resources such as electricity.
  • To develop an automation which will decrease human effort and work proficiently.
  • To develop a system which will be economical, having vigorous automation mechanism.

Project Implementation Method

Internet layouts of MRCS for water infrastructure

MRCS (Multi Resource Control System) determines five layouts for IoT which includes smart communication, smart security, smart monitoring, smart alerts and smart water level. Consequently, our water management system will be a smart control system originating from supplying, reserving and distributing.

Controller for electric-pump

A power circuit of the electric-pump will be designed, in which we employed a 4-state switch. This 4-state switch has four states which are off mode, run system manually, run system automatically at sate 1, state 2 and state 3 respectively. In an automatic mode the commands will be send by an SMS or a ringtone through IoT by using ZS7 controller. The sending of an SMS or a ringtone through IoT will be governed by the 3G or 4G of the mobile networks. Consequently, using a 4-state switch provides multi options in running and controlling the system.

???????Alarm Control System

The pump station can be secured through MRCS by using alarm systems through IoT. The alarm control mechanism will consist of a SMS Controller-U1. The controller is also commercially known as ZS7, which will be running through IoT. By designing an alarm system, a text message will be sent to the operator which means electric pump is in running state. Similarly, alarm system will notify the operator when an electric turns off but also control the water level in reservoirs. The alarm system also has the potential of using and installing a siren alarm or a warning device for this propose.

???????Controller for water-level reservoir

Designing a control mechanism for a level of water in reservoirs is a hard and interesting challenge because water reservoirs are installed at high level. Due to the importance of water level in reservoirs two methods has been proposed for developing a control for level of water in reservoirs. For providing a helpful hand to the system a flow switch will be used which will help in monitoring the presence or absence of water in reservoirs. This flow switch will in result assist the pump from running dry.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Multi-Resource Control system will be designed using PLC as a core component.

PLC then will be controlled by an automation or remotely or mechanically

All stats will be available on a SCADA system through IoT which will provide human interface.

An android application will be developed which help in monitoring data anytime and anywhere.
