Agriculture plays a dominant role in the growth of the Pakistani economy contributing nearly 25 percent towards Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The productivity of these crop producers has remained low and stagnant because many holdings comprise old trees with severe pest infestation. For example, the potential losses due to pests worldwide are estimated to range from 50% in wheat to 80% in cotton production. To reduce huge productivity losses due to pest infestation, therefore there is an immense need for the adoption of modern integrated pest management (IPM) practices in crop farms. This Project could be seen as a part of a broader effort to promote a sustainable system of agricultural production and to raise the incomes of crop farmers who suffer considerable yield losses caused by pests, diseases, and poor agronomic practices. The Project promotes the adoption of cost-effective pest prevention techniques and also provide facilities to the farmer . This application will be in Urdu language for better understanding of the farmers.
The expected outcome of the Project is the adoption of cost-effective technologically integrated pest management practices by crop farmers, hence increasing the productivity of the crops and strengthening selected farmer groups. The Project will target existing farms devoted to crops (wheat, cotton) in the province of Sindh. Communicating the results of these efforts, the benefits of IoT based IPM and relevant policy decisions to the crop farmers widely.
The project will meet the following objectives:
| Activities | Locations | Methodology/ Procedure | |
| 1 | Capacity building & Awareness
| Karachi | training related to technology, Safe Management of Chemical Pesticides (transportation, storage, handling, storage of empty pesticide containers and final disposal, Decision making on the selection of IPM approaches or options, consultation with domain experts, IPM Implementation using image sensors, temperature sensors ,sound sensors and real-time monitoring using image and sound recognizing algorithms |
| 2 | Environmental management
| Karachi | Environmental management in pest control: Equipment and sensors; real-life test-bed implementation; improved species, Pest surveillance |
| 3 | Project management | Karachi | Monitoring and evaluation through gathering real-time data by deploying a project on a cotton field |

Timely pest detection increases the productivity of crops. This would contribute significantly to the Project’s goals:
(a) To enhance and protect the environment.
(b) To improve product quality, and increase productivity and the incomes of farmers.
This project will be comprised of four basic components:
Motion Sensor
Passive Infrared (PIR) Detects body heat. It is used to detect the pest.
Night Vision Camera
To timely capture images of the pest. After capturing the image, the image processing algorithms will be applied for extracting information that will be, name and count of the pest.
Raspberry Pi B+
Raspberry Pi is a credit card sized computer that can be hooked up to a monitor or screen and used for hundreds of activities. It uses an SD Card to download operating systems and is charged with a small USB cord. All you need to get started is a mouse, an HDMI cord, and a keyboard. It will work as a controller for sensors connectivity.
Android Studio: Windows and Linux both support android studio, the current version we are using is 3.3.2 with lollipop and marshmallow operating system.
Python IDE: Python IDE is used for coding the sensor to communicate with hardware devices.
Database:
SQLite Database: It will be having all the information related to our system. User's login, registration, useful solutions, updating, transactions done through the database. Android studio version 3.3.2 uses inbuilt database support called SQLite. Which provides and support many features to handle database in an easier way.
For Communication:
GSM module: GSM/GPRS module is used to establish communication between a computer and a GSM-GPRS system. Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) is an architecture used for mobile communication in most of the countries. A GSM module can receive, send or delete SMS messages in a SIM. We are using the GSM module in order to send a notification to the farmer.
