Today accuracy in electricity billing is highly recommended. The Intelligent Smart Metering System gives real power consumption as well as accurate billing. Nowadays IoT based applications are becoming more popular because it provides efficient solutions for many real time problems. An IoT based Intelligent Smart Metering System using WiFi Module has been proposed that aims to reduce manual efforts for measuring the electricity units and make users concern about the excessive usage of electricity. Different sensors are used to fetch the pulse of the electric meter. In order to reduce human error and cost in energy consumption, a low cost wireless sensor network is implemented. . It will deal with mechanism of electricity theft and tampering of the meter. It allows the consumer to check the energy consumption and bill any time they login to the system whereas other existing system send the bill monthly to the customer.

Project Objectives

The objective is to bring ease for both the consumer and distribution company.It allows the consumer to check the energy consumption and bill any time any where they login to the system. They will get real time power usage along with Units comsumed and bill in rupees. For distribution company they will have real time analysis of multiple loads attached and get real, reactive and apparent powers. The data will be sent and stored in cloud and can be used for other things (i.e maximum demand etc). The distribution company also gets alert of the theft( i.e if someone bypass the meter). Power Factor measurement will also be in the  Intelligent Smart Metering System. 

Project Implementation Method

An Intelligence smart metering system which will help in two way communication between the consumer and the supplier, it can tell one the total amount of energy is consumed on daily or hourly basis. An optical sensor will sense the pulse and store it as one unit. WiFi Module will be used to send the data to cloud. Smart meters can also communicate directly with energy suppliers thereby eliminating the need for staff to visit homes to read the meter. We will invent a mechanism to deal with the electricity theft/ tampering of the meter by using a current sensor which will detect the theft of electricity. A capacitor bank will get signal if power factor is less than rated value to provide leading kVaR hence eliminating burden on generator and  distribution equipment. 

Benefits of the Project

Today accuracy in electricity billing is highly recommended. The smart energy meter gives real power consumption as well as accurate billing.

It can tell one the total amount of energy is consumed on daily or hourly basis  Hence eliminating the need for staff to visit homes to read the meter.

It is less time consuming and cost effective. 

Automatic processing, Transfer, Management and Utilization of metering  data.

Two way data communication protocol with meters.

It will provide meaningful and timely consumption information to the utilities and their systems.

It will support services that enable the savings of energy and cost effective.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Arduino Uno

ESP12/NodeMCU for transferring of data to cloud.

 Current sensors for theft detection .

Any AC Appliances like bulbs and inductive load device with low power factor

Capactor for providing leading kVaR

if power factor will be less thn rated value then the capacitor bank will be providing the leading kVaRs to system.

If we talk about single house or any single phase consumer ,it has negligable ammout of effect on generator and transmission equipment but a group of houses with low power factor has effect right from service mian till generator.
