Project Summary

Energy crisis is one of the gravest issues’ world is facing nowadays. Power resources are reducing day by day. It is becoming so difficult to power industrial and commercial societies simultaneously and continuously. It is because power demand is increasing at higher rate as compared to power production. To cop up with this issue nano technology is introduced. It is the fastest growing and developing technology in electronics world along with IoT. This technology allows to use the capabilities of electronic devices while reducing their size, weight and power consumption. Also, these devices are beneficial to use because these have low fabrication cost, good energy conversion rate and high output voltage. In this project we’re working on Hybrid energy harvesting scheme consisting of piezoelectric, triboelectric and solar energies. These energies will be harvested from ambient environment. An integrated module or device having properties and qualities of aforementioned energies will be designed. Moreover, this energy can be stored in Li-ion battery and can be further used to power electronic devices i.e. Capacitors, wind sensors and temperature sensors etc.

Presently, world is facing energy crisis. Its energy demands are increasing day by day. At the same time, it requires simultaneous and continuous power for devices. Keeping in view the current situation of power needs, for sustainable energy development, the hybrid energy scheme using piezoelectric, triboelectric and solar energies can be the best possible solution. Components with piezoelectric and triboelectric effects when combined can produce high out power due to cooperative operation of both piezoelectric and triboelectric mechanisms in a single press-and-release cycle. These energies, when integrated, can simultaneously or individually provide power supply to electronic devices by using whatever energy is present at that time.

In current times, energy crisis is at its peak. It’s becoming nearly impossible to operate and supply power to devices 24/7.This scheme will play vital role in fulfilling the power needs of devices. The integrated module which we’re designing will be first of its kind in which piezoelectric, triboelectric and solar energies will be harvesting energy individually, simultaneously and continuously. It will be capable of powering and driving micro/nano systems. It will be a self-powered generator. It has many applications in wireless sensors, medical diagnostics, environmental surveillance and defense technology. Also, the energy harvested can be stored in Li-ion battery for using in future.

Project Objectives

Currently, whole world is engulfed with Energy crisis. For tackling this hugely grooming energy crisis. The smart technology is emerging. Smart devices are being designed. Systems are becoming autonomous either it, be, in a medical field, defense technology or wireless sensors etc. However, all these devices need simultaneous and continuous power for their operation. To prevent any abruption in power of such devices we're aiming to design an integrated module that can act as a self-powered generator which will harvest energies from ambient environment through triboelectric, piezoelectric and solar mechanisms. It will bring a sight to sustainable energy development. The important thing is that the energy gained will be cheap, in context of cost. Moreover, it will be unique of its kind which will simultaneously, continuously and individually supply power to other devices. The whole and sole objective of this project is come up with a unique device that may be a great breakthrough in tackling the ongoing power and energy crisis.

Project Implementation Method

In this project we're going to design a self-generating hardware setup which will harvest solar, tribo-electric and piezo-electric energies simultaneously and individually from ambient environment.

In this project three kinds of materials are going to be used for harvesting three different kinds of energies i.e. solar, tribo-electric and piezo-electric. 

The brief implementation of project is as; Tribo-electric materials, piezo-electric materials and solar Panels will be embedded and arranged, in a specific and special way, on single metal sheet along with their energy generating, converting and storing circuits. This metal sheet will be, then, placed in between the doors (with wheel) of gateways. Whenever doors are opened or closed due to wheels movement, on a sheet, a triboelectric energy will be produced by triboelectric material. Also, when a heavy body like vehicle passes from gateway due to its heavy weight a pressure is put on piezoelectric electric material in return which will generate piezoelectric energy. Similarly, the solar panels are arranged on metal sheet in a way that most of the daytime they gate sunlight to produce electrical energy from solar energy continuously. The output of the harnessed energies will be stored in lithium ion batteries for use, then.

This project will be beneficial in a following way.

  1. Environment Friendly, no harmful emissions.
  2. Initial cost only.
  3. Self-generated module doesn’t need any fuel for running.
  4. Inexhaustible and constantly energy replenishing device.
  5. It can be used to power sensors and devices which need power 24/7 like temperature and pressure sensors.
  6. Low maintenance cost.
  7. Can be installed everywhere easily with very small efforts.
  8. Its energy can be stored in batteries for emergency use.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In this project, several crystalline metal plates of tribo-electric and piezo electric material will be used along with a solar plate. The three-energy producing material will be installed on a metal sheet. Ammeter and voltmeter will be connected in with materials to check the power generated by materials momentarily. Connecting wires will be used to make necessary connections. Also, springs will be used to create harness piezo-electric and tribo-electric energy and provide flexibility. Moreover, lithium ion battery will be directly connected to integrated module to store generated electrical energy. The materials and equipment will be bought from local Pakistani Markets.
