Project Title

Fiber channel point to pint link

Project Area of Specialization Cyber SecurityProject Summary

MIL-STD-15538 is widely used in avionics system for aircrafts, satellites and launch vehicles but its shortcomings are increasingly becoming a bottleneck for the design of new systems. Fc-AE-1553 (Fiber Channel- Avionics Environment-1553 is an emerging standard for aerospace applications that provides 1553B bus  command/response type of communication and also has an excellent network performance of Fiber Channel (FC). The project entails the design and development of point to point link for FC-AE-1553. It starts with an in depth study of FC-AE-1553 and Fiber Channel Standards. The student then begins to develop a simulation model for transceiver either in a layer by layer manner. Continous testing and verification is performed during the development of simulation model.

Fibre channel specifies use of 8b/10b code as its frame transfer transmission code because of its word synchronization and easy clock recovery features .This project devises a method to encode and decode 32 bit wide data stream in such a way that DC balance in the transmission line is maintained. The 32 bit encoding/ decoding process include combining 8b/10b encoder and 10b/8b decoder module in cascaded fashion. Unique transmission words is introduced which does not alias with the 12 special characters which are used to specify different functions for transmission efficiency.

Due to the recent and quick advancements in communication technology, fibre channel communication has become the most popular due to its higher transmission speed and bigger capacity. But the problem arises here is the base line offset, running length, and unbalanced code flow (DC-balance). To cater such issues, transmission codes have been introduced. The main purpose of transmission codes is to alter the frequency spectrum of serial data stream so as the recover the clock easily at the receiver end. Codes also provide special characters along with data characters which perform special functions that are character synchronization and frame limiters and delimiters. 8b/10b is a line code that is frequently used in fibre channel communication due to its features that respond to the mentioned issues of DC-balance and others.

Project Objectives

MIL-STD-15538 is widely used in avionics system for aircrafts, satellites and launch vehicles but its shortcomings are increasingly becoming a bottleneck for the design of new systems. Fc-AE-1553 (Fiber Channel- Avionics Environment-1553 is an emerging standard for aerospace applications that provides 1553B bus  command/response type of communication and also has an excellent network performance of Fiber Channel (FC). The project entails the design and development of point to point link for FC-AE-1553.

Project Implementation Method

Serially input data from a system.

A controller divides the data in frames.
Frame transmitter sends the data to an encoder which then encodes and serializes it.
The serialized data is transmitted through a channel and at the receiving end it gets deserialized and decoded.
It gets then transferred to frame receiver which stores the data in memory.
Depending upon the size of data, network controller holds or transfer the status in return.

Benefits of the Project
