Extraction isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds of Centaurium erythraea
Cantaurium erythraea is an ethnomedicinal plant of Balochistan, Pakistan. It is an annual herbaceous plant (20–60 cm in height) and locally well known for treating various diseases such as diabetes, dyspeptic condition, urinary tract infection (UTI), rhinitis, diuretic, hemorrhoids, stomach ailments, fever and loss of appetite. It is also believed that it can be effective against snake bites. C. erythraea is also found in many countries among Algeria, Balkan Peninsula, Italy, Morocco, Portugal and Spain. The literature reveals that C. erythraea has numerous bioactive compouds that exert tremendous pharmacological effects. As geographical distribution plays a vital role in accumulation of phytochemicals in a medicinal plant, thereby this plant is thought to be thoroughly studied and to extract the bioactive compounds for utilizing in drug industry. In this study C. erythraea will be studied extensively for its geographical distribution, botanical description, ethnomedicinal uses, phylogenetic relation and molecular description, antibiotic role, phytochemical investigation, and pharmacological properties.
The plant will be collected from Turbat as ethnomedicinalplant of Balochistan. The reason for collection from Turbat is usage of C. erythraea as short lived wonder weed that can be effectively used against many ailments. The selection of C. erythraea for this study was based on the survey in which C. erythraea was indicated as the most used multipurpose ethnomedicinal plant.
Overall Objective
The overall objective of this project is to determine the phytochemical and pharmacological characterization of C. erythraea and highlight its significant antibiotic activity against various microorganisms.
Main Objectives
Preliminary study
Before implementing the project, it was assessed for primary data. A survey was conducted through which the most important ethnomedicinal plant was chosen, having short life cycle but characterized with a broader range of medicinal properties. C. erythraea was the most favoured herb in all aspects, through survey. Thereby, C. erythraea was selected for further studies.
For executing the plan, a thorough study of literature will be done. The experiments will be designed on the basis of previous works done on C. erythraea. A Gantt chart will be made for tentative dates of experiments.
The sun-dried plants will be subjected to extraction and various extracts such as ethnolic extract, methnolic extract and water extracts will bemade. These extracts will be used for phytochemical, pharmacological, antioxidant and antibiotic activitivies. The bioactive compounds will be isolated and further studied through FTIR. The molecular studies will also be performed.
The data collected by various experimental designs such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), will be analyzed through statistical tool SPSS. The molecular properties, DNA sequence and interpretation of results will be done by the help of bioinformatics tools.
An advocacy plan will be implemented in the areas of collection such as Turbat and the feedback gathering activity will also be performed to analyze the success measure of advocacy.
A tentative schedule is given below that may be changed as needed.
Project Initiation Date: 01/06/2022
Preliminary Data: Already collected
Extractions and isolation of bioactive compounds: June-July, 2022
Pharmacological Characterization: August- September, 2022
Antioxidant and bioactivity: October, 2022
Data analysis and final report submission: November
This project will be providing the following benefits;
As Balochistan is a mountainous region, abundant with medicinal plants of great variety which are mostly not reported or discovered yet. This project can help highlight the most important and medically significantethnomedicinal plants of Balochistan.
Through this project, awareness sessions will be arranged for business community to highlight the significance of ethnomedicinal plants and investment in this field.
A collaborative research agreement can be signed with international research institutions who are interested to investigate the ethnomedicinal plants.
The isolated bioactive compounds could be further studied for not only their use in drug development but also in chemical industry such as cosmetics.
The results of this study will not only be shared with various research companies, publishing organizations but will also be disseminated to the local herbal shops for benefitting the nation.
