Project Summary

Neuroplasticity (NP) is the ability of the brain to form new connections and pathways in the presence of new information and stimuli. Every time when we practice, learn or think of something over and over again these connections become stronger and stronger and we harness the power of neuroplasticity. Our literature review showed neuroplasticity can be detected by Using Imaging Techniques and EEG Imaging Techniques such as fMRI, MRI, CT scan. EEG explore through Real-time, Spontaneous electrical brain activity, excellent temporal resolution (milliseconds). In this project, we aim to detect neuroplasticity by using low-cost OPEN BCI system. The investigation related to Diagnosis, Progression, and Effect of Therapy in Neurodegenerative diseases can be done via Neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is acquired through EEG Systems/Amplifier which is very expensive. Their prices start from US$ 20000 and also difficult to use in clinical setups. Due to high rates, we are not able to investigate the effect of Medical therapy in Pakistan. Therefore in this project we aim to use a low-cost EEG system i.e. open BCI. Using the OpenBCI, we will introduce neuroplastiy in the subjects through two different interventions, that are cognitive and memory. The EEG data will be recorded for 5 minutes and algorithms will be developed for efficient detection of neuroplasticity. We will Identify the most active brain waves and will Compare the EEG signals before and after the interventions.

•Induce neuroplasticity (NP) in subjects through some intervention

•Collect EEG signals using low-cost EEG system(OpenBCI)

•Find feature in EEG signals that signify NP

•Test the features using statistical tests and machine learning techniques

Project Implementation Method

Inclusion Criterion :

•30 healthy adults with no history of any Neurodegenerative disease/mental illness (MMSE>25)

•The mean age of the participants will 20 years(±2 years)

•The IQ level of the person  should not be less than 70.

Exclusion Criterion:

•Subject having any previous record of mental illness

•(MMSE<25)

• Allergic response to any gel

•Not willing to pay full attention as a subject in selected intervention group

the pre and post data(cog:nitive and memory) was collected with a gap of 4 weeks. and subjects were task as follows

Cognitive

•Sudoku game

•25-30 mins

•The EEG of the subject would be recorded  for 5 mins before,5mins during and after for 5 minutes after playing the Sudoku game for 4 weeks.   

Memory

•learn value of pie

•25-30Mins

•The EEG of the subject would be recorded  for 5 mins before,5mins during and after for 5 minutes after playing the Memory game for 4 weeks

stoke patients:

•Pre and post data collection

•Before and after cortical magnetic stimulation

Benefits of the Project

There are very expensive technique and techonologies like (fmri,meri,ct) for the study brain,especially neurodegenrative disease,and patient cannot be exposed to harmfull radiations every time,moreover such machinary is very expensive and is not avaiable  everywhere especially in 3rd world countries.A low cost OPEN BCI system can help us achieve all in a very afforadable price without any harmfull effects,and is accesable to all
