Project Summary

The green energy sources are the utmost needs of today’s world where the reserves of fossil fuel are depleting day by day. The Distributed Generation (DG) has become integral part of power system at commercial level. The most efficient among all DGs and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is the Fuel Cell (FC) power generation. The fuel cell invariably converts chemical energy directly into electricity. The Fuel cells have normally 60 to 70% efficiency at working conditions. The polarization curve of fuel cell plays important role in improving its efficiency. Moreover, the PV panel under normal operating conditions has efficiency of about 20%.

This research will analyze the technical and economic aspects of PV-fuel cell energy production in terms of efficiency, losses, energy production etc. Moreover, input parameters of fuel and PV cell will be varied and their effects on the output electrical variable will be observed.

The analysis will be carried in terms of mathematical modeling, simulink modeling and laboratory setup.

Project Objectives

  • Mathematical modelling of the PV cell, fuel cell, and PV-fuel cell generation.
  • To study the performance of the fuel cell generation in terms of efficiency, losses, energy production.
  • To study the performance of the PV cell generation in terms of efficiency, losses, energy production.
  • To study the performance of the hybrid generation of Fuel-PV cell.
  • To analyze the performance of the PV cell, fuel cell, and PV-fuel cell generation with the help of simulation and hardware implementation.

Project Implementation Method

In this project, the performance of PV cell, fuel cell, and PV-fuel cell generation will be discussed in terms of efficiency, losses, and energy production. To study the performance of the fuel cell, PV cell, and PV-Fuel cell generation simulation will be performed in MATLAB or any other appropriate software and, also, hardware implementation will be performed with different load conditions in order to understand its performance in the realistic situations.

In order to achieve the target efficiently and effectively following process will be carried out until the achievement of the target.

Literature Review - To study the different research works, to analyse and design the hybrid generation system in aspect of its technical and economic advantage.

Mathematical Modeling - To analyze the work effectively it is important to develop mathematical model of the system.

Selection of Software - For the research work to be carried out it is important that the

Selected software should have adequate features to allow modelling and simulation of PV cell, fuel cell, and hybrid system. The software checked for suitability is MATLAB.

Development of Model – To analyze the efficiency, loss and energy production a simulation model will be developed to get effective and efficient output.

Hardware implementation – to understand the actual behavior of the system hardware implementation will be performed because it shows the outcomes in realistic way.

Recommendation for future works – At the end of the research work, fields of future investigation will be identified and described. This is to enable future research works to use the outcomes of this work and further refine and build upon this work.

Benefits of the Project

- Batteries usage will be elimated

-Cost of Batteries for domestic use will be minimized

-Electricity can be produced by water

-User will be facilited with dual supply by Fuel Cell and PV Cell

-Load managment

-Effect Controling for enomonic supply

-Electrical load will be decreased from WAPDA
