Design, Analysis, and Manufacturing of Solar Driven Lithium bromide Water Absorption Chiller
In this project we will design and manufacture a solar powered lithium bromie water absorption refrigeration chiller. This project will be designed from the point of view of utilizing dormant solar geysers presnt in most modern homes in the summer season and using the hot water as the source of energy to drive our vapor absorption refrigeration system and provide effective refrigeration.
The objectives of our project include:
1. To provide effective refrigeration.
2. To design a vapor absorption refrigeration system powered with solar energy.
3. To be able to design and manufacture a working prototype for a solar powered lithium bromide absoption refrigeration system which, due to its compact size and low running cost thanks to the use of solar energy can be used in domestic applications.
In order to successfully and effectively complete this project, we will first study the work and studies related to this topic performed by other students and researchers (literature review). After this we will perform a market survey so that we have a list of the technical details and prices of all the components which will effect our design such as the pump which is used to pump the weak lithium bromide solution from the absorber to the generator, having an idea of the horsepower ratings of the pump available in the market will enable us to design our refrigeration system accordingly. After the market survey we will use numerical techniques and software such as EES (engineering equation solver) to numerically model our refrigeration system, this numerical design will provide us with the physical dimensions that will be used in the next fabrication step to create a working prototype of our refrigeration system. The final step will be documentation where a comprehensive report containing all the relevant material will be generated.
The benefits of this project are as follows:
1. This project will provide a low running cost and easy to maintain alternative to the vapor compression refrigeration systems.
2. By using already existing solar geysers and creating a compact design we will be able to significantly reduce the setup cost and required space for such a vapor absorption refrigeration system justifying its use in the domestic industry.
3. All of the vapor absorption refrigeration systems used in Pakistan in pharmaceutical laboratories and cold storage facilities are made on foriegn soil and imported into Pakistan after paying heavy taxes, by creating our own absorption refrigeration system we will provide a much more reliable and cheaper alternative for the local consumers.
Our final deliverable of this project will be the physical prototype which will be manufactured as per our numerical design calculations, it will be a compact design featuring a shell and tube heat exchanger as the thermal generator and cross flow heat exchangers as the evaporator and the condenser. We will utilize a solar geyser to provide hot water which will be the source of thermal energy for the thermal generator. The total refrigeration capacity, mass flow rates, and inlet outlet temperatures will be the same as the ones in the numerical design. The pump and the expansion valve will not be designed but selected from the market and fitted in the system as the system will be designed according to the selected pump and valve which are already present in the market.
