Project Summary

The present work aims to contribute in a fight against the spread of Covid-19, a novel human coronavirus, in hospitals, public transports and any enclosed areas. The most common method to disinfect places is to spray disinfectant liquids which are 70% alcohol-based. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it is really harmful to use disinfectant liquids regularly in public places. In this study, we have adopted the physical disinfection method by using UVC light as agent. Our objective is to build a powerful and efficient robot which can disinfect surfaces without any human interaction. We designed a robot that follows a predefined path. Which can be achieved through number of machine learning algorithms. Lidar sensor is used in robot for object detection and path planning. The future goal of this project will be to make fully autonomous robot, capable of mapping its surroundings and navigation through obstacles.

Project Objectives

To develop an autonomous robot that will allow disinfection in indoor environment to reduce pathogen transmission and exposure.

To inactivate microorganisms in order to avoid the spread of airborne diseases and infections. Proper disinfection and sterilization are required to reduced probability of disease transmission. Our goal is to build a fully autonomous robot, capable of mapping its surroundings and navigation through obstacles. This will be done through the use of lidar sensor and a path planning algorithm which, given a scan of the current surroundings, is capable of planning a path for the robot to follow that avoids all obstacles. SLAM technology will be use as path planning algorithm

Benefits of the Project

Practical Application: An easily manageable device that will allow surface disinfection without any human interaction.

UV light robots should be considered for use only in addition to manual cleaning practices and never relied upon for soul sterilization purposes. UV wavelengths are more effective when hitting a clean surface as dirt can trap microorganisms that may be difficult to be eradicated by UV light. Hospitals and other applications that have employed the use of UV light robots have realized many advantages such as:

Highly effective – UV light robots have been proven to significantly reduce harmful levels of pathogens to safe levels, in addition to manual cleaning practices.

No labor expenses – UV robots have become part of the staff in many hospitals, even given names of their own. Robots however never ask for a lunch break, a day off or overtime pay.

Low maintenance – UVC germicidal lamps provide thousands of hours of effective sterilization with low maintenance and low ongoing costs.

No additional cleaning chemicals – UV lamps provide high sterilization efficacy with no need to purchase and store chemical cleaners.

Return on investment – UV light robots provide a worthwhile return on investment to hospitals by reducing costs of extended hospital stays due to HAIs, which occur in 1 out of 31 patients according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC. Additionally, by eliminating superbugs from patient rooms and saving even one life due to serious infection, this added level of disinfection is priceless.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The UV disinfection robot is equipped with autonomous navigation technology, autonomous obstacle avoidance technology, Internet of Things technology, etc., which can complete automatic pathfinding, and automatic starting of disinfection tasks. The automatic disinfection process does not need human interference at all. At the same time, the UV disinfection robot can also detect obstacles and automatically avoid them, without human assistance.
