Project Summary

Due to heavy rainfall, severe flooding can be a significant problem, one that can potentially damage a city’s infrastructure, and disturb its routine for weeks, if not months. This project aims to minimize the damage caused, by detecting any abnormal rise in the water level in an area.

Most of today’s third world countries lack an effective flash flood warning system, and rely on more basic methods to manage most disasters. Most existing systems rely on:

  • Weather forecasts
  • Stationary devices installed at possible sources (e.g: Dams/Barrages)
  • Water level indicator

While these measures provide us with a means to issue an alert in case of a flood, there is no way to track it in real time, and more often than not, neighboring areas are often taken by surprise, and are unable to assess the intensity of any possible damages.

The degree of this problem was determined through investigative analysis by visiting multiple affected areas, and questioning the affected residents. The responses indicated a lack of knowledge of an incoming flood, and thus, most of these residents were not prepared to deal with such a threat. This solution deals with such threats in a specified radius, such as different residential societies.

The project is currently divided into three modules; an outdoor unit, and indoor unit, and an administrative unit. The outdoor unit will be monitoring the water level of any nearby source (e.g City drains). When the water level rises above a certain threshold, which may lead to a risk of flooding, a message will be forwarded to (a) the administrative unit (b) the indoor unit(s).

The indoor unit will be equipped with a touch-screen display, that will enable the user to receive any emergency updates from the administrative unit, or a nearby outdoor unit. Furthermore, the user will be able to inform the administration through the available interface.

The administrative unit will be receiving messages from both the indoor units, and the outdoor units. Each of them will provide the administration with the location, and nature of the emergency.

Project Objectives

The aim of this particular project is to design a system which is capable of detecting, and tracking incoming floods using GSM and Sonar. This can be implemented on residential societies, where the administration will be informed of any such emergency that may arise within its premises. Furthermore, this can be made available for domestic use as well.

Project Implementation Method

  1. Threats will be detected using different sensors.
  2. Then the address/location, and the nature of the threat will be transmitted via SMS, using a GSM module to
    1. The owner/s of the house or street.
    2. The central administration.
  3. The administration will be able to detect any possible earthquakes, which will enable them to issue an alert to the whole residential society.
  4. Residents will be able to alert the administration manually.
  5. Due to its modular nature, alterations can be made as needed. (e.g a fire alarm can be added).

Benefits of the Project

This project will enable timely detection of threats, such as possible floods, and, with the indoor units’ help, enable any area’s administration to track the progress of any such threat. Furthermore, the modular nature of this project easily allows alterations to be made in all three units, and even additional units can be supported in an existing system, depending on the requirements.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  1. Sonar Sensor:
    • The ultra-sonic sensor emits sonic waves that are reflected by obstacles and received back in the sensor.
    • After having emitted the sound waves, the ultrasonic sensor will be switched to receiving mode.
    • The time taken between emitting and receiving is proportional to the distance of the object from the sensor.
  2. Raspberry Pi LCD display:
  • 5 inch LCD display resistive touch support.
  • Resolution 800*480 cm.
  • Panel has low power consumption.
  • Short response time with high refresh rate.
  1. GSM Module:
  • It requires a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card just like mobile phones to activate communication with the network.
  • Also, they have IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number similar to mobile phones for their identification.
