Project Summary

In this part of the world, educational institutes still have conventional classrooms and offices, lacking any state of art technologies. A very common problem in classrooms, particularly in offices is that people do not know whether the faculty member is in his office or classroom, so they peek inside thus creating disturbance. This problem mostly arises in shared offices and here in Islamia College Peshawar faculty members and even some administrators are in shared offices. So, inorder to avoid such problems we are proposing a system that will detect employee (Faculty/administrator) while entering to his/her office and the status, for instance AVAILABLE, will be displayed accordingly on the display unit.

Project Objectives

  1. To automatically indicate presence or absence of office holder in his/her office.
  2. To avoid disturbance by guest/students who peek inside again and again in classrooms as well as offices.
  3. To display the information of ongoing class to avoid disturbance.
  4. To monitor the class timing of every teacher that will help the incharge of the Department in maintaining regularity for lecture deliever.

Project Implementation Method

In order to solve the problem, we propose to develop a system for automatically indicating occupancy status of a classroom and office. Using computer vision and embedded vision technologies, the presence of a faculty member will be detected and the status will be automatically updated on the screen installed outside the office/classroom. If an office is shared by more than one faculty member then facial IDs of all the members will be stored in a database. Whenever a faculty member enters his office, camera will capture his image and will match it with database, if it is matched then his name on the display will be turned from red (indicating absence) to green (indicating presence). A person other than the faculty members registered to a particular office will be considered as a guest. If no one is in office then all will be turned red on the display unit. The proposed system can easily be installed at classrooms and laboratories to let others know that class or lab is in progress. One of the advantage is that teacher can update the status of his office and of classroom as well. If he is busy, he can set the status to “Busy”. The motivation behind this project is that it’s very common that students disturb by peeking again and again that whose class is this and where is his class. Not only in class but in offices as well to ask about particular faculty member. It becomes so irritating especially when there are guests or you are preparing lecture or focusing on writing something technical. If a class is in progress, then teacher’s name and subject will be displayed as well.

Benefits of the Project

The main benefits of the project are three fold.

1) In first instance the occupancy of a class room or office will be automatically displayed on the display unit installed at the entrance. This information is necessary both for office residents and passers by.

2) Secondly, It will assist administrator/HoD/QEC representative for remotely monitoring presence/attendance of the instructor during the scheduled time table. In case of laboratory work, the same can be applied to a remote lab administrator.

3) In case of busy hours of an instructor/employee the office holder can expllicity mark his/her status as BUSY to avoid unnecessary disturbance by guests or students.
