Automated Airfield Controlling and Monitoring System
This project is based on the monitoring and controlling of the airfield lighting systems that will help in increasing the airport capacity and operation efficiency, improving the safety in air-traffic control and the aircrafts in the aviation industry. Airport airfield ground lighting systems are in charge of emphasizing the runway, giving visual reference of speed and alignment to aircrafts in the final stages of approaching, landing, and taxiing operations. When the weather takes a turn for the worst, pilots turn to airport lighting to make a safe landing and to navigate around the airport property
The aim is to build an airfield runway lightning system. Airfield lightning systems are those networks of lights and circuits which help guide aircraft in take-off, landing and taxing along the runway, easily overlooked by air-travelers but moreover, they play a vital role in safe air travel.
The aim is to highlight the need for improved airfield lighting systems. We consider the history of airfield lighting, and take a step towards a potential future development. The motive of this project is to control the airfield runway lighting system automatically as well as manually that include factors affecting lighting which may endanger the safety of aircraft.
This project is a prototype that concluded the implementation of control and supervision of airport lighting system. By creating more efficient traffic flows, intelligent airfield lighting can bring substantial efficiency improvements. For example, it has been calculated that at one major international airport, intelligent airfield lighting is saving up to three minutes additional taxi time per movement.
The first phase of the AACMS, calls for the development of a system of automatic runway status lights located at entrances to runaways and in front of positions from which takeoffs commonly begin. Both types of lights are designed for fully automatic operation in all weather conditions.
Ground lighting sits at the heart of airfield operations and upgrading to the latest intelligent technology opens up many new ways to improve operational efficiency and safety. Intelligent lighting is about more than just switching lights on and off. It’s about integrating the control of airfield lighting with airfield surveillance and aircraft tracking systems to achieve optimum aircraft routing to and from gates
One of the major advantages is the ability to use the lighting in a smart way to manage aircraft movements. ‘Follow the lights’ schemes can be set up, in which taxiway lights can be switched on in sequence to guide aircraft to and from the gates. The ‘Follow the lights’ procedure automatically provides flight crews with clear visual guidance while taxiing by individually illuminating the centre-line lights in front of the aircraft and switching off the segments not needed.
Intelligent ground lighting systems are proven to increase operational efficiency and improve safety. The technical approach of our project specifies four sensing points at arrival of airplane, at threshold and throughout the runway. The control of runway lighting system is hold by sensor interfacing of rain, fog, sound and luminous intensity modules.. When the weather takes a turn for the worst, pilots turn to airport lighting to make a safe landing and to navigate around the airport property
The sound sensor used for arrival of airplane, continuously scans if airplane arrives. When an aircraft approaches to the runway, the sound sensor detects the sound of an aircraft and displays ‘Plane is coming’ on the LCD. On the other hand, when there is no airplane approaching, the LCD will display ‘No Plane’.
The Lux sensor is an advanced digital light sensor, ideal for use in a wide range of light situations that generates an output signal that is proportional to the intensity of light.
Fog sensors are very useful in detecting fog or smoke in environment, and so are the important safety parameter. It read the sensor analog output voltage and when the smoke reaches a certain level, it will make sound a buzzer and a LED will turn on.
The rain sensor module is an easy tool for rain detection. It operates as a switch when raindrop falls through the raining board and also it measures rainfall intensity. The serial monitor displays the below result based on the amount water drop on the rain sensor module.
If the Rain Sensor Board is completely soaked; “case 0” will be activated and “RAINING” will be sent to the serial monitor.
If the Sensor Board has water droplets on it; “case 1” will be activated and “RAIN WARNING” will be sent to the serial monitor.
If the Sensor Board is dry; “case 2? will be activated and “NOT RAINING” will be sent to the serial monitor.
Finally, as the airplane reaches at the end of runway, the QR code on the airplane will be detected and the LCD display guides the pilot to take the airplane on the specified taxiway. Through the QR code sensing, we will identify the aircraft and will get all the information.
