Project Title

Auto Garbage Dry-Wet Waste Separator With Dustbin Indicator

Project Area of Specialization

Mechatronics Engineering

Project Summary

In Pakistan about 60 million tonnes of waste is being generated every year. Ten million tonnes of garbage is generated in metropolitan cities. The landfills of most of these cities are overflowing with no space for fresh garbage waste. it was found that about 50% people in PAKISTAN face the problem of improper waste collection and management. According to centre of science and environment, innovative disposal and recycling methods must be introduced instead of landfill sites. Thus, we have proposed a cost effective “Automatic waste segregator and monitoring system” for proper management of waste. Automatic waste segregator categorizes the waste as plastic, metallic or organic. The monitoring system helps to monitor the waste collection process.

  • Step-1: When the waste on the conveyer belt motor turns on and the conveyer belt starts moving.

  • Step-2: The controller, all the motors, and sensors are turned on.
  • Step-3: The waste is sensed by the inductive proximity sensor to detect if it is a metal or no.
  • Step-4: If the waste is metal waste then M1 is turned off and M2 is turned on and the waste is pushed into the metal waste bin. Also, the counter 1 is incremented (keeps a count of a number of metal waste dumped).
  • Step-5: If not a metallic waste, M1 is kept on when it comes in contact with the moisture sensor that decides whether the waste is a wet waste or dry waste by checking the moisture content of the waste.
  • Step-6: If the waste has some humidity it is detected as wet waste and M1 is turned off and M3 is turned on and the waste is pushed into the wet waste bin. Also, the counter 2 is incremented (keeps a count of a number of wet waste being dumped).
  • Step-7: If not a wet waste M1 is kept on and then the waste is dropped into the dry waste bin placed at the end of the conveyer belt.
  • Step-8: Finally the wastes are dropped into the respective bins and the segregation process is completed.

Project Objectives

Zero waste is good for the ECONOMY. Reducing, reusing and recycling creates 10X more jobs than disposal

  • Separate recyclable material-reuse
  • Recovery of materials & energy
  • Hazardous waste-separate landfills
  • Minimization-reduction in landfill space

Project Implementation Method

Conveyor belt:

it is used as belt for moving the object of sorting which is connected with the help of plc power or motor is installed to rotates the belt

we are using this type of conveyor belt

  • Roller Bed Conveyor Belts.

Moisture sensor:

The generated waste gets economic value only if it is segregated in an efficient manner. The waste can be sorted into dry, wet and metallic waste. A moisture sensor has been used to sense the moisture contents of the waste; if the moisture content is above a preset threshold value then the waste is wet waste.

Tensiometric and volumetric are the two primary sensor types that measure soil moisture. As the name implies, tensiometric sensors or probes measure soil moisture tension, or the potential soil moisture.

IR Sensor:

Infrared sensors can be used to detect the presence of organic waste. But the method of detecting organic waste by way of differences in the weight of organic waste with waste paper and plastic waste is less precise. Often the system fails to sort out organic waste. The infrared sensor used is FC-51.

There are basically two types of IR sensor: Passive IR sensors and Active IR sensors. Passive Infrared Sensors (PIR sensors) do not need an infrared source to operate. PIR sensors detect the infrared rays emitted.

Passive IR Sensor

Active IR Sensor

PLC:

Use of PLC has added advantages like reduction in manpower with improved accuracy and speed of waste management, also avoiding the risk of working at hazardous places. In Future, the work can be implemented by making use of a sensors to throw and place certain materials which can be re-used.

The two main types of PLC are fixed / compact PLC and modular PLC.

Inductive sensors:

Inductive sensors for metallic items, and capacitive sensors to distinguish between and plastic and glass waste.

Capacitive Sensor:

A capacitive sensor  is used to distinguish between and plastic and glass waste.and is a proximity sensor that detects nearby objects by their effect on the electrical field created by the sensor.

The proposed system “automatic waste segregator and monitoring system” sorts wastes into two different categories, namely Metal and DRY/WET (organic) waste. Wet waste refers to organic waste such as vegetable peels, left-over food etc. Separating our waste is essential as the amount of waste being generated today causes immense problem. Here, we have tested the household wastes which are generated in every home today. This method is hazardous to human health, plant and animal life. When the waste is segregated into basic streams such as plastic, metallic and organic, the waste has a higher potential of recovery, and then, recycled and reused. The organic waste is converted either into compost or methane-gas or both. Compost can replace demand for chemical fertilizers, and biogas can be used as a source of energy.

Benefits of the Project

Waste Sorting Conveyor Belts. Sort through bulky items and fill landfills faster with our industrial strength conveyor systems.

Applied Conveyor Technology Inc. (ACT Group) is a multi-industry supplier of dust suppression and industrial conveyor systems. One of those industries is waste management. There are many ways that our custom trash sorting solutions can improve efficiency. Our proven products are great for all cycles of trash sorting in landfills. Waste management companies look to us to help with three core areas: plastic or  dry waste conveyor belting, wet waste suppression,
