ANALYZING THE EFFECTS OF HEAT TREATMENT: RELIABILITY AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT OF A GEARCASE AT PAKISTAN LOCOMOTIVE FACTORY
Some of the issues in gear case without heat treatment are reduced strength, brittleness, reduced ductility, stress raisers and a negative impact on microstructure which results in failures. According to the industrial demand, locomotive’s gear case should maintain desired mechanical properties, so as to last for a long period of time with high quality, ease of machining, reduce cost that is to improve industrial aspects. So, our project emphasizes on problem these issues.
Main objectives:
To enhance the life span of gear case by heat treatment. To reduce cost by increasing life of the gear case. Quality improvement by enhancing mechanical properties of gear case. To observe impact on manufacturing processes like machining etc with heat treatment and without heat treatment. To conduct experiments to investigate the impact of heat treatment on gear case.
The process methodology is to develop locomotive gear case by performing an additional process in order to improve its industrial aspects like cost, life time, quality etc by enhancing the mechanical properties of mild steel. The main process involves heat treatment of SS400 under specified conditions. Mechanical properties and microstructure will be analyzed by performing different tests in laboratory such as hardness tests and testing the microstructure etc, after obtaining results from heat treatment and without heat treatment on mild steel we will compare the mechanical properties and based on this judgment we will conclude that whether industrial aspects which are the basic objectives of this study, are improved or not. We will also observe that whether manufacturing processes like machining etc are improved to some extent as a result of this analysis or not.
