  1. Introduction

Electrical energy is very important for everyday life and spine for the industry. We know that electrical energy crisis is the fundamental and major problem today facing the most countries urban and rural areas in the world. Energy crisis is increased due to the increases number of electrical power thefts in countries day by day. Every country wants to reduce electrical energy crisis and save it in large amount for the purpose of providing this amount of electrical energy to the industries, factories, house hold and other electricity users. Electricity companies’ losses money every year due to the power theft. The power theft detection system is that system which identify the theft occurs due to the illegal connection.

There are two types of losses namely transmission losses and non-transmission losses, which is also called as a term technical losses and non-technical losses respectively. The transmission losses are that losses which is obtained during transmitting electrical energy from generation station to the load means consumer’s side. While the non-technical losses occur due to the wrong billing, false or wrong meter reading, electricity theft etc. the first two types of losses can be prevented through or by taking proper meter reading and calculating exact or accurate bill for electricity consumed but these can be executed or acting through human manipulation work. While the second one is hard to prevent the electricity theft. Power theft is a non-ignorable crime and at the same time it directly affected the economy of the nation. So therefore, for this to reduce the chance and control of theft to increase the amount of electrical energy, and maintain the economy status of the country we present or design such a system which identify power theft on distribution line and energy meter tamper. The energy meter tamper means that when bypassing the energy meter using a piece of wire or due to the magnet element placed on the energy meter.

Objectives

The expected objectives of the project are as follows:

  • Detection of electricity theft on distribution line without human interface.
  • Send automatic information to the authorized head office through wireless method.
  • Show and indicate the exact zone on distribution line where unauthorized tapping and meter tampering occur.
  • Save the huge amount of electrical energy to maximize the profit margin of power utility company.
  • Reduce the human manipulation work.

Project Implementation Method

  1. Methodology of Project

The methodology of the project will be carried out as follows:

    1. Power Supply Module

Initially the power supply is AC of 230v with a frequency of 50Hz which is fed into the system which needs to be regulated to 5v and 12v respectively. For this step-down transformer is used to reduce 230v to 12v with a frequency of 50Hz. The output of the transformer is then fed to the bridge rectifier to convert AC to DC. The output current is consisting of some ripples which is not suitable for DC component, then these ripples remove through using capacitor filter.

    1. Meter Reading Module

The meter reading module is used to read the number of units consumed by the consumer and display it on LCD screen. The input of the meter reading unit is connected to the microcontroller and the output to the energy meter. When a power unit is consumed a signal is generates and send it to the microcontroller. The microcontroller is program to keep a track of units consumed and then same information is displayed on LCD screen.

  

    1. Theft Detection module

The main function of this module is to detect the meter tampering of energy meter, disconnection of the power supply and send a message of power theft to the management side. The magnetic sensor is used in theft detection unit to detect the meter tampering when a consumer tries to tamper it. Then the sensor generates a signal and send to the microcontroller as well as to the relay circuit. The relay circuit is used to disconnect the power supply. Then the microcontroller sends the theft information to the management side through via communication unit.

  • Illegal connection or tapping occurring on distribution line.
  • Meter tampering occur by different method (bypass, magnet).
  • Meter readers take wrong meter reading manually.
