Project Summary

Do you know whether your fresh water is safe enough to drink? All of life on our planet depends on less then 1% of fresh water in:

Preserving the qualitiy of this fresh water is essential to prevent harm to human health and to the  ecosystem. Natural events and human activities can lead to water pollution, resulting in poor water quality. If we dont moniter water quality, we dont know exactly what the impacts of these activities are. By making this project it is possible to identify these impacts determine risk to human health and to the eco- -system and to plan and implement appropriate management measures. 

Water is an essential element in our daily lives. Detection of unhygienic impurities in water is one of the major concerns of human society. Our project proposes a method to perform detection of impurities by using sensing components to bring quality detection of water. In the money conservative market like Pakistan, less importance is given for public hygiene and there is a general myth that any quality monitoring system would be costly and complex in its operation. Our project presents different sensors which detect different impurities present in water. The design makes use of giving the people to use quality water. The important measures like Potential Hydrogen (pH), Oxidation and Reduction Potential (ORP)and Turbidity of the water are monitored, computed and analyzed that data is sent immediately to the database to have a better understanding which areas are most affected.

Project Objectives

In the developing countries more than 60 percent population has no access to pure drinking water.  The basic question in the production of drinking water is how to rid drinking water of potentially dangerous microorganisms and chemical without introducing new hazards that might pose new and different threats to human health. Water treatment and distribution system, if not properly operated and maintained can be a source of disease outbreak affecting large populations. Therefore, the monitoring and surveillance of quality of raw water sources as well as treated water need to be enhanced.

Our main objective in this project is to design a system which can detect quality of water by using different sensors.

objectives of creating a data base:

The Smart Water Quality Monitoring System will measure the following water parameters for analysis; Potential Hydrogen (pH), Oxidation and Reduction Potential (ORP). Sensors can be used to measure the amount of different minerals in water and store it in a database. Like the Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP) Sensor measures the ability of a solution to act as an oxidizing or reducing agent. Bottled water tends to have high ORP levels of more than +400mv, which makes it oxidizing in nature. Other Sensors include pH sensors which measure pH value of water. pH is a measure of how acidic/basic water is. The range goes from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. pH of less than 7 indicate acidity, whereas a pH of greater than 7 indicates a base. By using these different types of sensors, we can measure the amount of impurity in water and store the overall data in a database working behind in the form of a website or an application. Sensors will be interfaced using Arduino Mega and the amount of minerals or impurity will be calculated, the collective measure of All the sensors would be taken and stored in the database. Which will be further used to make up a Final call whether the Water is pure or not.

Project Implementation Method

The first task and a very integral one is to determine which water parameters would provide a close indication for water contamination. Through extensive research the parameters were chosen to be pH, oxidation and reduction potential (ORP) and temperature. Independently these parameters provide very little information in terms of how polluted the water is. Therefore, in analysis we will consider collective parameter behavior in order to generate a valid output, which is either polluted or non-polluted. The system comprises of sensors, a microcontroller currently using Arduino mega, an SD storage and a Wi-Fi module. The data collected can either be stored on board via the SD card or sent to a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server or a cloud server.

Water quality will be monitered.

Pakistan is an agricultural country. High groundwater nitrate-N is a serious problem especially in highly active agricultural areas.   People are exposed to elevated levels of nitrates through drinking contaminated water, using contaminated water in food preparation and irrigation of food crops, industrial processes and eating contaminated food.

Long-term exposure to nitrates, mainly through drinking-water and food, can lead to chronic nitrate poisoning. Skin lesions and skin cancer are the most characteristic effects. Our product will identify which areas of Pakistan have dangerously high level of nitrates contamination.

A data base will be made for the people to look up the quality of water in their areas.

This will greatly help in reducing the dieases causes form drinking water.

The data will be available for researchers and for surveys.

  • A portable module to monitor the quality of water.
  • An application that will display the sensor data.
  • A website containing database reguarding water quality in different areas of Pakistan.
  • A database at a national level.
  • This will be portabe.
  • Very to use.
