Its consumption is increasing day by day which give rise to water scarcity by 2025. Pakistan is destined to run out of water too fast. So, there is dire need for possible solutions to overcome this crisis. Water is treated as free property with no concept of conservation. CDA (Capital Development Authority) which is a public benefit corporation responsible for providing municipal services measures water according to property size which is wrong because small size property or houses can have more water consumption than large size property houses. There is no guarantee of less usage of water by small houses as they consume water all day long and large houses consume water for few hours. So, there should be an appropriate method to measure the consumption of water and then bill the property according to the amount of water used. For this purpose, we will design a wireless water flow monitoring system. In this system, sensors will be used. Sensors will be placed at different spots inside the pipe. When water will flow through the pipe, water flow meter sensor will measure the rate of water. This sensor will give the data. Data is then routed to remote computer server by the communication sensor via the home Wi-Fi and the Internet. These sensors will be programmed with the help Arduino. This data is saved on database and with the help of data, billing will be calculated. Here, idea is to make the water measuring and the communication sensors battery less that is these sensors will produce energy power for itself to work. This will be one-time cost Project. No maintenance cost will be required. As a result, break-even point will be achieved earlier. This is the point at which cost an income becomes equal that is neither loss nor profit. After achieving this point, there will be profit with no investment.
Project ObjectivesWater is the basic need of life so it should be used effectively. Water usage at a household level can be effectively reduced by increasing consumers’ awareness and changing their inappropriate water use behaviors in the daily routine. For this purpose, this system has various objectives.
One of the objectives of designing Water flow monitoring system is to ensure water usage by monitoring the amount of water consumed by a household according to property size and notify the same to the consumer and the authority. With this system, billing will be done according the amount of water consumed by the property not by the size of property.
The other objective is to make the battery less sensors. Such sensors will produce energy itself for its working we don’t need to provide energy through any external source that means it will be a one-time cost project. Ultimately maintenance cost will be zero.
One of the objectives of this system is that sensors will be able to measure the level of water of the tank. If tank is full or about to full sensor will generate an indication to stop further supply of water which can effectively reduce wastage of water.
The other objective is to check the quality of water. Quality of water can be checked in many ways. One way is to use an indicator. This Indicator will check the purity of portable water that the consumer receives. If the quantity of any particle in water is more than the normal then this indicator will change its color. In this way water will be examined. It is also important to measure the temperature of water. So, to meet this objective temperature measuring sensors will be used. These sensors will measure the temperature and tell both the consumer and the authority.
On achieving all these goals/objectives, our water supplying system will help the local authorities to improve the current system. We will have the proper check and balance; suppliers will know exactly that how much quantity of water is required ultimately percentage of water wastage will reduce.
Project Implementation MethodThe water flow monitoring system is designed for collecting detailed information on the amount and the way water is used by the consumers. Sensors that will be use in this system will be placed at different spots inside the pipe. Battery less sensors will be used. When water will flow through the pipe, sensor will collect the data. Sensor will measure the temperature of water, check the quality of water, flow rate of water and level of water in the tank. Sensor will be programed with the help of arduino. Arduino consists of both a physical programmable circuit board (often referred to as a microcontroller) and a piece of software, or IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that runs on computer, used to write and upload computer code to the physical board. Data collected by the sensor is routed to a remote computer server via the home, Wi-Fi and the Internet. This data is saved on database and with the help of data billing will be calculated. This information will be shown to CDA. A smart water-flow monitoring system or Application will be provided to users to see their water consumption. This system will also provide calculated bill according to consumption. It will help them to reduce their water usage. At the same time, users will be alerted to abnormal water usage to reduce water loss. By finding the difference between the information of amount of water pumped by CDA and amount of water consumed by user, we can detect the leakage in the pipe.

Real Time Data Collection is another benefit of Smart water flow monitoring system. Similar to how a doctor uses a stethoscope to measure your heart rate, a smart water flow monitoring system is capable of measuring water flow in real time by sensing the pulse of the water’s movement through the sensor.
One of the benefits of this system is that we provided the user with the Application. A smart water-flow monitoring system or Application will be provided to users to see their water consumption. This system will also provide calculated bill according to consumption. It will help them to reduce their water usage. At the same time, users will be alerted to abnormal water usage to reduce water loss.
Leakage alert is also a benefit in this system. In addition to providing with an overview of property’s water consumption, smart water flow monitoring systems will notify of leaks the moment they occur using sensors. That means we will never be surprised by outrageous water bills, and when there is a critical issue, we can remedy the situation in a timely manner to save money and water.
Water flow monitoring system ensure water usage by monitoring the amount of water consumed by a household according to property size and notify the same to the consumer and the authority. Technical Details of Final DeliverableFinal deliverable will have a hardware part, a software part and a server side. Hardware part includes sensors (communication sensor and water flow measuring sensor), Arduino microcontrollers and electromagnetic energy harvester. One sensor will use to measure water flow, temperature and quality of water and water level of the tank other will use to communicate water flow measuring sensor and server. Electromagnetic energy harvester will use to generate power. Software part will use to code sensors using Arduino. All calculated information will eventually move to the server which will perform billing process.
