Walking Aid For Visually Impaired People
There are millions of people who are either visually impaired or are totally blind. The lack of visual capabilities has limited these individuals from completely perceiving their immediate surroundings which has potential safety concerns and also lowers their quality of life since they must rely on some sort of aid to get around. Currently, in order for visually impaired individuals to get around, they rely on walking canes, guide dogs, and/or personal human aids for assistance. While these walking canes and guide dogs may allow the individual to get around independently, they each have a common drawback. These aids cannot completely warn individuals of obstruent objects in their vicinity. A human aid provides this intelligence but makes the visually impaired individual very dependent on the human aid. The aim of this project is to propose a practical device, designed for visually impaired individuals to assist them with getting around. The purpose of this project is to detect objects & recognize people in surroundings through obstacle detection & image recognition.
Design a portable device for visually impaired individuals that will alert the user of obstacles in their path during outdoor navigation as well as recognize people through obstacle detection/avoidance & face/image recognition.
i. Design of a practical & smart walking aid for visually impaired using camera & sensors.
ii. Implementation of obstacle detection and alert after object detection.
iii. Implementation of image recognition of people and objects.
iv. Implementation of a text-to-speech engine .
A good solution to the problem will be a device that is portable and is able to alert the user of obstacles in their path when the user is walking. This walking aid will basically help visually impaired to detect obstacles and recognize people using obstacle detection & image recognition. For the purpose of this project, we streamlined the problem defined above to assist visually impaired individuals with getting around outdoors. We believe a project like this will create the case for further investment in creating smarter electronic devices to assist visually impaired individuals with getting around with great ease and help boost their self-confidence.
This protable device will have an array of sensors (i.e. 5 ultrasonic sensors) for obstacle detection and a camera for face detection/recognition as well as object detection. Furthermore, the camera will also be used for a text-to-speech engine.
All this is implemented as a Neural Network (A.I.) on a Raspberry Pi 4 in Python language where the A.I. will be trained for various objects for detection/avoidance and also facial recognition.
