Project Summary

Home automation is a growing industry worldwide, where many solutions are coming to improve the quality of life through convenience as well as reduction in bills.  Most of the currently available home automation systems are expensive and support only specific devices thus users have to buy these costly appliances and their examples are Google and Alexa home automation series that require to buy smart appliances or appliances of some brands only, but proposed system did not have the requirement to buy supporting appliances rather existing appliances are made smart by this system.

The proposed system is to design an IoT based Home Automation System which will be controlled through voice and manual commands using android application. This system will control home appliances (including Geyser, Fan, lights, Motors, AC, Refrigerator, etc.) through an Android application running on any android supported device by using voice commands and buttons on android app, making it suitable for handicap users.  The system will have one Master controller and two slave controllers: type one and type two. Master controller will control the secondary controllers on one side and on the other side it is connected to android application via internet. The type one controller will be used to switch ON or Switch OFF the electrical appliances connected to the switch board. Type two controller is to control and monitor electric geyser. Additionally, the timer option will also be incorporated to the geyser control, through which user can select a particular time interval for switching ON a geyser as well as user can set up the temperature of geyser as per user requirement using Android Application.

Project Objectives

The main objectives are

  • To remotely control the home appliances
  • To use an android app for controlling the home appliances using either voice commands or manually
  • To enable a handicapped person to control and monitor appliances
  • To automate the existing appliances of the house so that there will be no need to buy supportive smart appliances.

Project Implementation Method

The System will consist of two modules: one is scalable smart switch that is replaceable with conventional switch and will control home appliances connected to the switch board and second module consist of the smart controller for geyser. The proposed system will be controlled through a user-friendly android application interface to switch ON/OFF the home appliances and to control the electric geyser functionalities like setting the desired temperature of geyser and timer option to select a particular time interval to automatically switch ON the geyser in that time. The system will function through different sensors and Arduino microcontrollers.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The prototype system will consist of a main controller that will control two secondary controllers: one attached to a switchboard to switch ON and switch OFF the electrical appliances and the other to control the electric geyser. The main controller will be connected to a secondary controller through RF communication link and to android application via cloud. The android application will have the option of controlling the devices using both voice or manually. Particularly for geyser control, the timer functionality to switch ON the geyser for any time interval will also be included.
