Vertical Take off and Landing Aircraft

VTOL is a hybrid configuration aircraft that is capable of performing take-off and landing operation, vertically for better and fast performance.In this final year project, the VTOL will be fully autonomous and it will be used for some real-life application to perform a particular task.

Project Summary

VTOL is a hybrid configuration aircraft that is capable of performing take-off and landing operation, vertically for better and fast performance.In this final year project, the VTOL will be fully autonomous and it will be used for some real-life application to perform a particular task.

The project aims to fabricate and design a VTOL powered lift vehicle that can takeoff and land vertically but while in flight, it can perform similar to a fixed wing aircraft and has a conventional fixed wing configuration.Although there are many types of VTOL aircraft, but this fyp will utilize tilt-rotor mechanism for vertical take-off and landing.

Project Objectives

The project aims at fabricating a cost and energy efficient VTOL but aside this, the project ( VTOL Aircraft) can be slightly modified to use it as a firefighting plane that recognizes fire through sensors and drops water in the vicinity to not only save human lives but also wildlife.

Project Implementation Method

For the firefighting application mentioned above, the VTOL aircraft will be equipped with a tank containing water or fire extinguishing material.This tank will release the fluid through a nozzle. Also, thermal sensors will be placed in order to sense the temperature of the surrounding and provide signals to the microcontroller to turn on the nozzle.   

Benefits of the Project

There are multiple benefits of this final year project. Firstly, the VTOL configuration will allow the aircraft to take little or no runway area and it will also be able to reach the affected area fastly as comppared to the simple fixed-wing aircraft. Moreover the aircraft will be capable to fight with fire in such areas where humans are not able to reach.  

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In this fyp, 4 aircraft motors will be used.These motors will be equipped with a tilt-rotor mechanism, using servo motors.For the autonomous function of aircraft, PixHawk microcontroller will be used.

On the other hand, the tank will be mounted on the aircraft base using bolts. The tank output will contain an electronic valve that will activate the nozzle.The thermal sensors will allow the nozzle to release fluid as soon they sense a certain temperature.
