Our project is a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine for highways. It is very different from conventional wind turbine design. The blades of the turbine rotate on a vertical axis instead of a horizontal. Our design deals with the turbulent winds on ground levels produced by cars rather than the natural winds

Project Summary

Our project is a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine for highways. It is very different from conventional wind turbine design. The blades of the turbine rotate on a vertical axis instead of a horizontal. Our design deals with the turbulent winds on ground levels produced by cars rather than the natural winds on higher levels. Our design includes the production of DC electricity by a DC generator which is being rotated by the turbine. After the production of electricity, the voltages will be then regulated by and then stored in batteries      

Project Objectives

The objective of the project is to design a turbine according to our own country's needs.   We need a turbine which is used to rotate a generator of low torque and high speeds. To use the wind energy more effectively would maximize the energy production at even fewer wind speeds and the burst of wind from the cars passing by could be properly utilized and maximum efficiency could be achieved for our production. After the generation, the energy can be stored in batteries or be used directly to power up different things on motorways like the toll plaza and motorway lights. The project would be very helpful for an uninterrupted supply of green electricity and useful for even those side areas along the motorway that face electricity shortage.    

Project Implementation Method

The Project can be implemented across the highways and motorways of our country. A similar design with some iteration can be used in underpasses as a decorative and energy production unit to power the underpass lights. It could also be implemented on railways as when the trains would pass the turbine would spin and produce energy to power lights alongside the railways. The project would be more effective if more of these turbines are installed and they work together and produce energy to be stored in batteries or to directly power lights and other electrical equipment.

Benefits of the Project

The main benefit of this project is it is producing green energy as no fossils are burnt during the process and we are getting the energy we need, basically by this project we are utilizing the wind energy from the passing by cars that would otherwise be wasted. As this project is not dependent on solar energy and would not be idle at night like solar panels but as there are cars on the highway at night so there would be some energy still being produced at night therefore it has an edge over solar panels. The maintenance cost is also very reasonable. The parts are quite robust to face the weather condition of our country and are also easily available.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We are using a low torque, high-speed motor as a generator the generator is rotated with the help of fins which are made vertically around a rod. The structure of fins is made of a metal frame with aluminium sheets fitted inside them. The motor and generator are coupled with a pulley the turn ratio is almost 1:4. The whole outer frame is made of metal. Now we heading towards the voltage regulating part we are going to regulate the variable output voltages by buck boast typologies. Then we are going to use charge controllers
