Project Summary:

We are aiming at ease of the patient and limiting risks and diseases caused by attached electrodes to body of a patient by developing

                                                    “Non-Contact Respiration monitoring system and sending

                                                    data to the concerned on a remote location (concept of IoT).”

Current Technology:

Respiratory rates (RRs) are monitored using impedance pneumography (IP), which measures the changes in electrical impedance resulting from aeration of the lung and movement of the chest wall through electrodes attached to the chest skin.

Our system will be:

Contact-less and Non-invasive

  • Wireless Monitoring using Impulse radio ultrawideband (IR-UWB) radar.
  • Painless and comfortable
  • Accessible anywhere through internet remotely (IoT-based)

Radar system used:

  • Transmits a band of radio waves
  • Receives the reflected waves from the object.
  • Occupies a wide frequency band (greater than 500 MHz)
  • Is High resolution
  • Has multipath resistance
  • Has good penetration power
  • Can recognize subtle movements of human body such as chest movement even behind the clothes.

Therefore, we will use it to calculate respiration rate in our project.

Electrodes or cables used may also serve as sources of contagious diseases and require replacements.

Remote Access Of Data:

This project will include an e-health aspect in which we will built a smart hospital compatible based equipment making  sure the availability of data to the concerned (doctor or staff) at remote location.

The data collected by the sensor will be filtered. The processed data would be sent to a cloud storage. From the cloud data would be shared to the relevant person. We will develop interface for devices (Android etc.)  through which doctor or relevant people can access patient’s data remotely from his office or anywhere.

Project Objectives

Project objective:

Non-Contact Respiration monitoring system and algorithm (based on Signal Processing and Machine Learning) design as well as its implementation using X4M06 Radar Development kit (IR-UWB), EMU 8266, Arduino Nano etc. The respiration rate will be shown in real-time on Smartphone App by utilizing cloud services (for remote access of doctor).

Project Implementation Method

    

Project Implementation method:

     We will be using a commercially available IR-UWB (X4M06 Radar Development kit) for this project purpose.

  • This sensor will send the signals and collect the reflected signal from the chest.
  • MATLAB is a commercially available software package will be used for acquiring, processing and storing the data.
  • Signal Processing will be performed by software algorithms and Fourier transform and other techniques will decompose a signal with respect to time into a frequency component. This will be used to extract the frequency component of the Respiration Rate from the vital sign signal.
  • The processed signal (output) will be displayed on user interface, a fixed screen for monitoring purpose or mobile based User Interface Applications.
  • Using the concept of Internet of Things (IoT) the output would be uploaded to cloud so that processed signal can also be accessed remotely.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of Project:

The product may be implemented in various critical areas, especially in hospitals for monitoring the respiration rate of patients in a coma without using connection probes. The patients may be:

  • Newborn babies in incubators
  • Parkinson Patients
  • Patients in a coma
  • Patients suffering from severe illnesses

The benefits of having a connectionless respiration monitoring include:

  • Respiration monitoring without electrode connection.
  • Prevention from skin infections, skin damage, including eruptions, abrasions and ulcerations to skin.
  • Precaution from contagious diseases (occurring from using electrodes on skin).

Technical Details of final Deliverable:

The final Product will be:

  • A complete product for contactless real-time IoT enabled breathing rate monitoring system.
  • The hardware part will be comprising of IR-UWB radar sensor, Wi-fi Module, Arduino platform and Smart device for data processing and display.
  • The software part will contain implementation of proposed algorithm, cloud services management for data storage and retrieval and development of smartphone App.
