Condsider a disaster sitaution such as an earthquake in which the buildings collapse along with the mobile communication tower. Now everyone of us carries smartphones with us, but in such a situation they become useless. Our goal is to provide communication under such circumstances.
when a disastor occurs, rescue teams have very little information to go off of due to the nature of the situation. any relevant information they get is very important for rescue operations. If information such as number of victims, even vage location information and surrounding environment information is relayed to the rescuers, both time of rescue operation and chances of survival increase.
Project ObjectivesThe objective is to create is a reliable and independent peer to peer network which is able to allow android phones to communcate with each other. The netwrok should allow mobile devices to send and recieve text messages, pictures, live video feed, audio and location.
There is also an added objective of a portable device that can be used to relay all of this information to a central position, which could be base of operations of the rescue team.
The mobiles should also be able to do all of this automatically as a user may not necessarily be in a position during or after a disastor to carry out such actions himself.
Project Implementation MethodTo establish communication we will be using smartphones as they are so common that almost everyone has them, and it is not an extra piece of equipment that a person has to carry with him at all times.
For communication method, we will be using wifi-direct as this is also a feature that almost every smartphone contains and there is no extra hardware that needs to be carried.
The smartphone is a capable device that can send and recieve audio, video and text message. An android application is developed that firstly detects the loss of convetional communication and then the mobiles in the surrounding area will automatically form a netwrok using wifi direct amongst themselves. this netwrok is completely independent of any outside help, and will stay alive till the batteries last.
The rescue team can come in with raspberry pis, which are equiped with wifi. They will be able to connect to the established network and use a series of them to extend the network to the resuers base of operation, where they will be connected to a computer that will collect and display all usefull information.
Benefits of the Projectthe benifits of this project is that it can provide critical information to the rescuers, so that rescue time decreases and chances of succes for the operation increases.
the project for generalized scenarios where convetional communication goes down, this can be due to a natural disastor or even a man made sitaution such as a hostage situation or terrorist attack in which they jam the mobile signals.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable- A mobile app that is capable sensing loss of communication and then establishing a network through wifi direct that is capable of sending and recieving text, audio, video, pictoral and location messages over the netwrok.
- An app for rapsberry pi so that the raspberrypis can connect and then act as realys for the network that was created over wifi direct
- A computer application that is capable of recieveing and sending text, audio, video, pictoral and location messages over the wifi netwrok, and then dislpaying/playing the information in a meaninful manner
