Project Summary

The project "Traffic signal system automation using Arduion Mega board and Image processing techniques" will automize the current traffic signal on highways junction/ Railway junction.

As the current traffic signal system is dependent upon time and it does not operate with  the density of traffic which is its basic function on highways junction/ Railway Junction. The project will open and close a highway signal based upon density of traffic on that road by taking images of traffic on that highway and compare it with a threshold value. Based upon that threshold value of traffic it will open and close the highway which will be independent from time.

Project Objectives

The objective of the project " Traffic signal system automation using Arduino Mega and Image processing techniques" is to automize the current traffic signal system from manual to automize system which will depend upon density of traffic and not depend on time.

Project Implementation Method

The project system is based upon image processing and Arduiono Mega board used to manage the traffic problems in advanced way.

1. Cameras will be installed on highways junction to take images of traffic on that high continiously, images will be store in the data base of the system.

2. The number of vehicles in the images will be compare with a threshold value of vehicles and when it matches, command will be send to Arduino Mega AVR microntroller.

3. The AVR microcontroller of Arduino Mega board will make Green the traffic light signal on that highway and vehicles will be pass.

4. when number of vehicles decrease below the threshold value, microcontroller of Arduino mega board will make Red the traffic light on that highway  and traffic will be not allow to pass

5. like the above procedure the project will work for Four side double lane highway junctions

Benefits of the Project

The project will automize the manual traffic light system use every where in pakistan/ foreign countries which will depend on density of traffic and not on time.

because mostly we observe on the present manual traffic light system that even no vehicle is present on the road, the road light is Green and open

mostly we observe that alot of vehicles are waiting in one road for passing and that side is closed although other side has no vehicle but it is open.

Arduino Mega board

Security cameras will be installed on highway junction

data base will be made for number of vehicles comparison

traffic light interfaced with Arduino mega board will be installed on highway junctions.
