Thermal screening drone
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryA thermal imager is a non-contact temperature measurement device. Thermal Imagers detect the infrared energy emitted, transmitted or reflected by all materials at temperatures above absolute zero, (0°Kelvin) and converts the energy factor into a temperature reading or thermos-gram. A thermos-gram is the thermal image displayed by the camera of the object which is emitting, transmitting or reflecting the infrared energy.
Project ObjectivesSolar panels, electric towers, large windmills are often located in remote areas and often have heating issues. The system will detect the object thermally, transmit the information to the processing unit which inturn detect the relevant object and display the image on screen. COVID-19 (Corona virus) is the major issue these days, this system can also used for scanning the body and detect the temperature for classification purpose.
Project Implementation MethodA thermographic camera (also called an infrared camera or thermal imaging camera or thermal imager) is a device that creates an image using infrared radiation, similar to a common camera that forms an image using visible light. Instead of the 400–700 nanometre range of the visible light camera, infrared cameras are sensitive to wavelengths from about 1,000 nm (1 ?m) to about 14,000 nm (14 ?m). The camera capture the image and transmits the date for further processing

A single-board computer is used for processing the information received from the thermal device. After data manipulation the result will be displayed on the screen. The powerful graphics capabilities and HDMI video output will help in fast data processing.
Digital image processing is the use of computer algorithms to create, process, communicate, and display digital images. Digital image processing algorithms can be used to:
- Convert signals from an image sensor into digital images
- Extract desire information from image.
- Improve clarity, and remove noise and other artifacts
- Extract the size, scale, or number of objects in a scene
- Prepare images for display or printing
- Compress images for communication across a network
Many have asked if aerial inspections can replace someone conducting inspections from the ground. I believe that rather than ever replacing jobs, it can help streamline a difficult process, prevent major disasters and properly educate the repair team of what is going on before they even step foot in the field. High resolution thermal imaging is nothing new to the inspection world, but the ability to use this technology with drones creates a whole new scale of opportunity for businesses to take advantage of.
The science behind thermal imaging is capturing and studying temperature differences. The temperature differences we study in the field can help us to identify an array of problems and even help you map out and identify where your underground pipes exist. What is not new to the technology of thermal imaging is its ability to spot pipes underground, identify over heating electrical problems, identify gas leaks, spot problems with roofs, or identify energy efficiency issues.
In short, TarilloVue has gone Infrared. So how do drones change the capabilities of this technology that already exists and how can that help your business.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe project will be good exercise to learn various engineering aspects of technology in data communication and image processing. It will be a source for acquiring knowledge of the current systems and their integration methods. Working on thermal screening drone through raspberry pi using image processing in MATLAB will be way forward towards a complete project to handle over all.
