Studying Psychological impact via Structural Equation Modeling
Project Area of Specialization Biomedical EngineeringProject SummaryMental health-related disorders are prevalent throughout the globe and account for 25% of the total population as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). As per the World Bank report 2019, mental health issues have been ignored and cause an economic loss of about 1 trillion USD. Up to 16% of the total population of Pakistan suffers from neuropsychiatric sickness. The prevalence rate of 22%-60% for anxiety and depression is reported for various localities of Pakistan. The prevalence rate of 22-60% for anxiety and depression is reported for various localities of Pakistan. Moreover, up to 12.4% of the Pakistani civilians belong to a high-risk sleep apnea group and 33% of stress is reported by WHO in Pakistani population.
Psychological health has always remained a neglected field in Pakistani culture thereby contributing to the prevalence of mental health issues among Pakistani civilians. A wide variety of factors have been identified in the literature among which includes economic insecurity and increasing poverty, political and religious instability, gender discrimination, sexual violence, infrastructural limitations, terrorism, and ethnic violence. Neuropsychiatric disorders have also been regarded as a major cause of disability-adjusted life years (ADLS). The COVID-19 pandemic has positively contributed to the psychological distress thereby compromising the mental health of the general public at large.
Despite, the growing prevalence of mental health issues in Pakistan, there is little to no efforts being carried out with an aim to improve the psychological health of the general population of Pakistan. it is the need of time to introduce analytical techniques to identify the primary contributors of mental health issues.
In view of the aforementioned limitations, the proposed project aims to deploy the modern data analytical tools or techniques for investigating the effect of mental health issues prevailing in the Pakistani population. The proposed project will also identify the predictors of psychological distress and thereby provide assistance to the government and health authorities to upgrade the health policies and implement technological health care solutions to control the accelerating pace of psychological distress.
Project Objectives- This study will determine the prevalence of psychological well-being among the general public of Pakistan along with the identification of primary predictors that contributes to psychological distress.
- It will identify the relationship that exists between different features and their impact on the mental wellbeing of the general public of Pakistan
- This study will upgrade conventional health practices by implementing technology in the health care sector and provide assistance and suggestions to the government to create up to date health care policies.
Compliance of the project with Sustainable development goals
SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all stages
Identification of key predictors/factors of psychological distress will assist in the development and deployment of up to date healthcare policies which in turn ensure quality healthcare solutions thereby improving the standard of life.
SDG 8: Promote sustainable, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work or all
Enhancing the standard of life will allow individuals to perform actions which in turn increases productivity and thereby contributes to sustainable economic growth.
Compliance of the project with Pakistan Vision 2025:
Identification/recognizing the key factors that are the potential contributors of psychological distress is the only possible way to plan, provide and implement proper health care services and facilities thereby considering the well-being of people first to ensure healthy lives and increasing the quality of life of all.
Project Implementation MethodNeuropsychiatric ailment where social and affective functions are compromised has always remained a major threat. The outburst of COVID-19 has further affected the psychological health of individuals. It is therefore crucial, during this censorious time of COVID-19 pandemic to identify the key factors of psychological distress and take necessary actions for effective management of mental health-related problems thereby ensuring both physical as well as psychological well-being of individuals.
Stage 1: Interest variables declaration
Questionnaires will be design associated with sociodemographic, socioeconomic status, and physical health conditions. It also includes psychological standard questionnaires for depression, anxiety, stress, fear, mood, sleep condition, well-being and quality of life.
Stage 2: Survey Development
An appealing survey will be developed using Google Forms. Along with the English version, each item in the form will also be translated into the Urdu language so that every respondent can fill the form with ease.
Stage 3: Data Collection
The developed survey form will be spread all around the regions of Pakistan via personal connections, social media platforms including Whatsapp, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Email, and through physical meetings with people.
Stage 4: Data Processing and Modeling
Respondent’s data will be evaluated or assessed through the implementation of different high-end algorithms and tools of data analytics. Structural Equation Modeling and other path analysis techniques will be applied to gain full insight into the gathered mental health data.
Benefits of the ProjectThe proposed project is a new initiative to improve the mental health of the general population of Pakistan by highlighting the root cause of psychological distress. Some of the major benefits associated with the project are listed below:
