Project Title

Smartphone based Screening for Diabetic Eye Disease

Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject Summary

In this era of technology there is an important and essential clinical need for low-cost, dependable, easily operated, and convenient retinal screening to evaluate preventable elements of blindness in patients. The project aims to provide the feasibility of a smartphone-based imaging system corresponding to imaging of opthalmoscope. Ophthalmologists can use this system to examine the eye on the field and refer the patient for further treatment. Even a normal person can take eye images (make short videos) through a lens attached to a smartphone and send them to eye specialists for their diagnosis. This optical attachment is inexpensive, and is a valuable substitute to overcome potential problems of direct eyeball, poor examination skills, and inexperienced observer bias. Its flexibility presents an encouraging platform for screening and telemedicine not only in hospital and clinics but also in non hospice settings.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is an eye disease caused by diabetes. It’s a medical condition where diabetic patients with diabetes show abnormalities within the affected eyes as fluid flows from the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue in the back (retina) of the eye. Opthalmologists acknowledge DR based on features such as exudes, microaneurysms, hemorrhages, blood vessel area and texture.

Diabetes is the dominant element of sightlessness in adults. If detected in a timely fashion and treated, blindness can be prevented by the progression of diabetic retinopathy. The project aims to handover a teleopthalmology (telemedicine) platform. Teleopthalmology is a branch of telemedicine that provides eye care through digital medical apparatus and telecommunications technology. Typically, this approach relies on expensive and heavy surface units operated by a trained technician during a hospice/dispensary settings. These units are complicated optical assemblies that demand patients to sit upright that is usually tough for hospitalized or bed rested patients.

Our goal is to implement sophisticated technological development, which transform diabetic eye treatment into a comfortable experience for patients. This approach will minimize patient suffering and improve accessibility of nonintrusive retinal imaging in eye diabetic patient populations. Smartphone-based screening is a particularly engaging approach to retinal imaging because it significantly reduces apparatus cost whereas capitalizing on the prime quality camera and computational proficiency of smartphone.

Project Objectives Project Implementation Method

We’ll prefer using Iterative model for developing this system. This is because iterative model involves repetition. Rather we start with complete requirements, we will implement a set of requirements, then perform testing, further evaluate and analyze multiple new requirements and repeating same circle again and again. With each iteration we’ve a new working version of system available.

When going for the development of the whole system we’ll first go for the application and software design and afterwards for the hardware design, further more we’ll involve study participants and then we’ll be dealing with photographic and clinical interpretation. Afterwards we’ll generate a dataset regarding this project.

Benefits of the Project

So our study concluded benefits that it this era of technology there is a big need to design  small, effective and efficient hand held units capable of diagnosing diabetic eye patients with their reliable interface. In this regard our system that is smartphone-based will offer a chance of completely growing access to eye care by remote screening and diagnosing of sight-alarming diseases between various people not getting eye treatment regularly. When we’ll achieve our target it will depend not only on boldness, flexibility, movability and portability of smartphones, however also on the designing of new emerging technologies that improve picture reliability and quality. As a result of our project the resulting system will not only be usable by eye specialists or any expert operator but also by a normal human.
