Project Title

Design of Rocket Motor for Assisted Takeoff of Target Drone

Project Area of Specialization Mechatronics EngineeringProject Summary

The aim of the project is to design a rocket motor capable of carrying a 120 kg target drone to a speed of 216 km/h. In the first phase a suitable propellant was selected according to the required specifications following the basic design of the rocket motor. Next the case was designed capable of withstanding the high chamber pressure and an insulation was designed to keep the case from heating beyond its melting temperature. Next the propellant grain was determined to achieve the required burn rate and lastly the nozzle was designed to find the area ratio to achieve the required mach number at the nozzle exit. A CAD model according to the designed rocket motor was developed.

Project Objectives

The objective was to design a rocket motor capable of giving an assisted takeoff to a target drone which is not equipped with landing gear and is being launched using a catapult launcher. The rocket motor would give it sustainable thrust and the risk of drone stalling would be minimized

Project Implementation Method

In the first phase a suitable propellant was selected according to the required specifications following the basic design of the rocket motor. Next the case was designed capable of withstanding the high chamber pressure and an insulation was designed to keep the case from heating beyond its melting temperature. Next the propellant grain was determined to achieve the required burn rate and lastly the nozzle was designed to find the area ratio to achieve the required mach number at the nozzle exit. A CAD model according to the designed rocket motor was developed. The rocket motor would be fabricated according to the designed rocket motor with the help of CAD model developed and would be attached to the target drone using a detachable clamp mechanism.

Benefits of the Project

The target drone is not equipped with landing gear and is being launched using a catapult launcher. The rocket motor would give it sustainable thrust and the risk of drone stalling would be minimized. The rocket would then be recovered after it gives the flight to the drone by detaching from the drone

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

A suitable propellant was selected according to the required specifications following the basic design of the rocket motor.
