Smart Surface Irrigation System
Water has become a serious concern for Pakistan as its per capita reserves decreased from 5640 m3 (1951) to less than 1000 m3 that is very alarming situation. Major part of this water wasted through conventional surface irrigation by deep drainage, trail water loses and evaporation. Researchers are facing serious issues to monitor quantity of irrigation water for agriculture experiments. Conventionally, control of water from channel to field is done via manual nakka system and it can’t ensure precision supply of water. Developed world uses automated control system for managing irrigation water from canal to water channels (WC) and then from WC to fields.
Proposed solution is based on interlinked irrigation control gates, with mobile and web application user interface having advance functionality to control and monitor the open channel irrigation system remotely. Cloud base Intelligent System will automatically manage and schedule water irrigation base on the user’s instructions.
By the combined effort of electronic-physics, engineering and automation, electric sluice gates will be developed locally. In first phase, material for vertical sliding gate will be selected and on the base of selected material design of gate will be finalized. Fabrication of sluice gates would base of the final design and specifications of electric motor will be prepared by considering water pressure, side thrust and physical conditions to install gates. As such electric motors will be arranged and fitted on the gates (Time period 2.5 months). Initial tested will be carried in the lab without water and final tested will be conducted in the field conditions. These gates will be coupled with flumes to supply measured quantity of water in the field. In order to operate these sluice gates, solar cell powered system will be used by installing solar plates along with a backup battery. Backup battery will help supply irrigation water during night times. After this, principles of agriculture engineering will be applied properly to install these sluice gates at different water channels.
A small field will be divided into multiple partitions and one gate will be used to serve for one partition so that each field can be irrigated separately (Time duration 1.5 months).
A mobile application will be developed by applying automation techniques to operate the sluice gates wirelessly. Success of small scale automated system will give a lead to develop large scale commercial unit for farmers. (Time duration, 1 month).
Total duration: 5 months (Small model)
Outcome:
We can increase the agricultural productivity and income of small-scale food producers by automated control irrigation system. As automated irrigation system will control the flow rate which will reduce wastage of water at trail ends of field which will reduce surface evaporation with night irrigation. Also overwatering make water loss and decrease crop yield, so control and timely irrigation will increase the yield of crop and will reduce wastage of extra water.
As most of the water is used in agriculture, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.
Proposed solution is based on interlinked irrigation control gates having different sensors. Having advance functionality to control and monitor the open channel irrigation system remotely.
Cloud base Intelligent System will automatically manage and schedule water irrigation base on the user’s instructions.
