Project Summary

A Smart Traffic signal system is an AI-based traffic management system, which will control the flow of traffic by means of traffic density that is by the number of cars on the road.

The computer will analyze the number of cars if the traffic of one road is lower and the traffic on the opposite road is heavy then the Program will assign and give more free time to the opposite traffic to lower its density and manage traffic well better.

We will install visual cameras integrated with traffic signals.  Visual data incorporated with machine learning algorithms to analyze the traffic flow on the roadsides. The traffic signals will work according to the traffic flow.  We will use computer vision to detect cars on road and by the means of programming, it will assign time to each road signals to don't left vehicles to wait in line for no reason if the road is clear.

Project Objectives

We describe the objectives of our project as below:

  • Making the traffic singles smart to overcome the congestion based on the traffic density.
  • Integrate a visual camera with the traffic lights to have visual data of the traffic.
  • Train and learn the visual data using machine learning techniques to observe the traffic density.
  • Control the traffic lights using visual data, computer vision, and machine learning algorithms.
  • Set the timing for the traffic lights to keep them on and off.
  • Testing and commercialization of the project into a product.

Project Implementation Method

  • We will modify the already implemented traffic signals by placing a camera and programmed microcontroller which will detect the cars and control the traffic lights.
  • Cars detection will be done through computer vision modules and OCR text detection for ambulance and security vehicle detection.
  • We will use machine learning to learn the visual data to detect the density of the traffic.
  • The microcontroller will be programmed to work efficiently and taking all the aspects in sensations.

There are huge benefits of the proposed project. We list some of them here

  • There will be fewer traffic jams and congestions as the traffic signals will work on the traffic density.
  • More lives could be saved as we will be willing to give special protocols to live-saving vehicles.
  • The project will have a night vision camera that will work in night time too.
  • The time of all the people including officials, students, doctors, and all people will be saved.
  • Healthy and active people and society because of the reduced stress.  

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Some of the technical details are

  1. The cameras will be connected to the microcontroller. 
  2. The microcontroller will be connected with traffic signals. The microcontroller will have the control to switch on and off the signals.
  3. The deep learning algorithms will be trained over the traffic density.  Which will automatically command the microcontroller to turn on and off based on the traffic density.
  4. Night vision cameras will be integrated to work in low lighting conditions.
