SMART CITY ENERGY MANAGEMENT & MONITORING SYSTEM USING (Io T)
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryPower meters in Pakistan have been predominantly electromechanical in nature, but have gradually been replaced by more sophisticated and accurate digital and electronic meters. A high percentage of electricity revenue is lost due to power theft, incorrect meter reading and billing.
In order to automate the billing and global management of the collected data, we work on Internet of things (Io T) for wireless communication that provides the customer with remote access to their electricity consumption. It replaces traditional meter reading methods and allows power provider easy access to all the details of consumers. Power provider can also monitor meter readings regularly without the person visiting each house. There is a server on the distributor end, which contains the database of all users’ energy consumption which acts as a billing point. The meter readings updated in the database of the server in every fifteen seconds though Wi-Fi enabled meter. A web page is also there so that user can access from anywhere in the world at any time, just entering by their respective account numbers. The full monthly use and the corresponding invoice are also uploaded to the website after processing this data. And if the bill is not paid by the due date, the power will be cut off remotely by the energy provider. There is also smart grid present in each zone so the total power exit from the grid is the sum of power entering in each house if the sum of power is greater than the total power so it means misuse of power occurs, by this method we can cure power theft.
Project ObjectivesEnergy management system is usually an electronic system that records consumption of electric energy & communicates that information between consumer & supplier for monitoring and billing. The smart city consists of different zones. In each zone there are two houses, in every house there is smart meter which is connected with Internet so that it sends its unit information to central server. A central server at which all data gather and can be easily access to every user from anywhere through internet using their specific User ID or Consumer ID consumers can easily check their energy consumption online. There is also LCD present in Smart meter so every consumer can also see their unit consumption on that LCD.
Project Implementation MethodThe project consists of a three acrylic body smart meter, having measuring and sensing circuit, LCD and ESP8266 Wi-Fi module. Connectors have seen shown on top of all meters and the connection between these connectors has been done by using 3/29 copper cable. Arduino is powered up by 5V DC, current measuring circuit is powered up by 5V DC and voltage measuring circuit is powered up by 9V AC. All three meters are powered up by 220V AC.
On power up, the first thing Arduino does is to reset the whole program, at same time clear LCD and then start configuring ESP8266 module by AT commands. LCD Display IQRA UNIVERSITY when it powers up. Secondly Arduino start its loop working, A0 and A1 analog pins of Arduino is used for calculating current and voltages used by Load, on back hand this task is performed by the ACS712 and Voltage Divider circuit and then further calculation done by Arduino and save values on EEPROM. After that all values which are store on EEPROM of Arduino fetch by ESP8266 Wi-Fi module and send to the central local server with in every fifteen seconds.
On the server end values are saving continuously in database of local server. After this all required values go to the website and update according to meter number, so user can access the site enter his account number and get know about his per day usage and also get per month bill
Benefits of the ProjectThis project is to give brief idea of energy management, monitoring and its intelligent use. This project gives an idea of monitoring energy and of individual houses and grids by using Arduino, ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module and ACS-712 current sensor and voltage measurement circuit. There are number of uses of Arduino in embedded systems for performing specific task, communication and other intelligent system, we have design this system especially for the whole city but this can also applicable in industries depend on expensive. Few major components and ideas used in this project are as follow;
- Tariff calculation.
- Per unit price of electricity can be altered.
- Real time energy consumption monitoring via local server.
- EEPROM based real time data storage system.
The idea is to design a fully automated Smart City which automatically manage and monitor the entire energy system. The objectives are given below:
- Using Arduino calculate voltage, current, power and units.
- Show the readings of voltage, current, power and units on the LCD of smart meter.
- Saving of Data on EEPROM of Arduino. These values will stay in the EEPROM when the board is turned off and may be retrieved later by another sketch.
- Acquiring of data from EEPROM, and then send data through Wireless shield on central server.
- Developing a central server at which all data acquire then process and then send it to web server.
Users can easily access using their consumer ID from anywhere using internet and look out there unit consumption and price; it is easy-to-use system for continuous and contemporary monitoring of energy consumption
