Smart assistive device for visually impaired
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummarySignificant development has been made in the field of rehabilitation in the last few decades. Our blind friends bear difficulties in performing their daily routine tasks and in most cases, they depend on others and their daily works is done by others which makes them dependent on others. Noticeable improvements can be seen in commercially available devices for the help of virtually impaired people. In spite of the recent advance technologies, this area still needs highly efficient and small tools that can help such people in moving smoothly and with freedom. Keeping in view the issues and difficulties faced by the blind in their daily life, a device is being designed named Smart Blind Stick to bring ease in their life and to help them live an independent life. The smart stick is lightweight, having a camera module, ultrasonic sensors for object detection and indoor positioning system. Once the obstacle is detected or anything is placed in its path it will tell what is detected by the camera module and will tell the distance of object letting the user know what is happening in its surroundings also telling the user where to go inside the house or building. The stick will be designed to provide them with comfort in the best possible way so it is easy to hold and efficient to use.
After this, we will move on to the camera module which helps the blind to get the sense of the direction. The camera will wear by the blind and it will detect the number specified on the wall which will tell them to turn left or right. This will help them to reach a specific destination without taking the help of others. This system will work indoor and also outdoor.
After this, we will move to the Indoor Positioning System, which will help to locate the person inside the building and the person could also take help from the Indoor Positioning System to reach a destination.
Project ObjectivesThe main goal of our task is to develop a smart stick, Camera Eye for Blind (Camera Module) and Indoor Positioning System that can help all kinds of blindness. Therefore, the goal that we have decided is to establish a versatile device that can tell them the distance to an obstacle using the ultrasonic sensor and can tell the person what the obstacle is in his way. The Camera will detect the number and give visually impaired the sense of direction (in the way they want to go) and Indoor Positioning System will help them to locate the person inside a building, also that will help the visually impaired to reach a specific destination.
Project Implementation MethodAt the start, we will develop a smart stick. The Ultrasonic Sensor and microcontroller will make it work. This will be able to detect the obstacle coming in the way of the blind person. The main aim of this would be to avoid the head collision and to detect the stairs if they came in the way.
The Camera module will detect the number that we will put on the wall, and this will help the visually impaired to reach a destination. Like in the gallery way we put number three, when the camera will read this, it will inform the user "You have reached gallery". In this way, the user could know, where he wants to go. This will be implemented with the help of Nvidia Jetson Nano and a webcam.
The Indoor Positioning System will be implemented with the help of the iBeacon Technology and Android System. Due to this, we can pinpoint a person inside a bulding, because GPS does not work inside the building.
The benefit of the projects are the following:
- This will make the life of Bind easy.
- This will immune the blinds from head injuries and falling from the stairs.
- This will help the blind to reach a destination in a building.
- This will give them a sense of the surrounding.
- The family of the blind could easily track them.
Smart Stick :
- A stick made out of the wood.
- An ultrasonic sensor that has a range of 400 cm and a resolution of 1cm.
- Arduino Nano will be used to control both Ultrasonic sensor, (one at top and one at the bottom), warning mechanism.
- Nano contains Atmel 328p
Camera Eye for Blind:
- Nvidia Jetson Nano will be used to implement it.
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning libraries of Python will be used for detection and Classification.
- Google Coral Board will be used. (a second option)
Indoor Positioning System:
- iBeacon Technology by Apple will be used.
- This will be implemented with the help of the Raspberry Pi and Android Operating System.
