Project Summary

In this modern era of technology with the advent of fast cars, heavy truck, etc. and also huge underpasses, super highways and giant pulls, there is the aspect of monitoring these wonders and maintaining them at all costs. So thus the reason for research on improving the road conditions to make the ride as smooth as possible. Our project aims to assist and help the government maintain the road conditions. Normally the check and balance of the road is good to go but what if there is a way to exactly pinpoint the location where the repairing work is required? Our Project will locate that part of the road as vehicles move along it attached with our device, those locations will be marked to make the job of government easier.
When driving, a driver can suffer injuries due to speeding the car over bumps and in countries like Pakistan there is a new speed breaker made every other hour inside societies without the consent of the government. So concluding that the condition of the roads inside Pakistan is extremely poor. Our project focuses on this aspect and let the driver know the hurdles he may face ahead. This Project being helpful to those who are traveling on a route unknown to them while also being helpful to those who are habitual of taking a certain route as the most recent anomalies will be marked by using crowdsourcing approach. So the driver is quite comfortable as he knows which is the convenient road or maybe that a part of a highway is broken and he has to look for alternates. As most of the drivers being habitual of a route just rush through a road without much awareness, our project helps him beware of the abnormal road ahead and hence preventing accidents and injuries.

Project Objectives

With the increase in world’s population, there has been increasing load on the infrastructure. Roads have been flooded with the vehicular traffic. It has become increasingly difficult to manage this traffic. This is the prime motivation behind making a vehicle intelligent enough to aid driver in various aspects. One of the increasing problems the roads are facing is worsened road conditions. Because of many reasons like rains, oil spills, road accidents or inevitable wear and tear make the road difficult to drive upon. Unexpected hurdles on road may cause more accidents. Also because of the bad road conditions, fuel consumption of the vehicle increases; causing wastage of precious fuel. Because of these reasons it is very important to get the information of such bad road conditions, Collect this information and distribute it to other vehicles, which in turn can warn the driver.  There are various challenges involved in this. First of all there are various methods to get the information about the road conditions.  This information must be collected and distributed to all the vehicles that might need this information. Lastly the information must be conveyed in the manner which can be understood and used by driver.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The use of tri-axial accelerometer and GPS do the most sensory work in the methods proposed by engineers and scientist. These sensors collect data when the vehicle moves on different types of roads. Another popular one is the use of the sensors inside a smartphone.
-In our Project, we will take inspiration from tri-axial accelerometer and GPS one as the smartphone will change its threshold value according to its position thus no hardware compactness and a lot of thresholds and variables to deal with and hence we eradicated the idea of using smartphone sensors altogether. Further more We will use Arduino mega 2560 for our Project. Considering Arduino Uno it has a fewer I/O lines which wouldn’t fulfill the scope of our Project so we will use the Arduino Mega 2560 instead, as greater the size the harder it hits the ground so the Project may be more powerful but is complex on the same line too. Adding up, it has 54 I/O pins, 16 of them being analog while 14 of them can do Pulse Width Modulation.
-Gyro sensors are used to calculate angular velocity of an object. The Accelerometers senson are mostly Micro-Electro-Mechanical Sensors (MEMS). Depending upon the Second law of Newton, a small mass is suspended by beams in the integrated circuit, as the device moves in any direction it accelerates thus produces force so it displaces mass and the purpose of accelerometer is achieved.
-The accelerometer and gyro we’ve used in our Project is MPU 6050 which calculates the X, Y and  Z channel at the same time [11]. We’ve used this because it has both accelerometer and gyro integrated into a single chip thus making it cheap and also more effective.
-SW-420 The Vibration sensor works by the appliance of force, if the force is applied on it will give input HIGH voltage whereas if there is no force applied an input low voltage will be the status
-The SD Card Module is a simple solution for transferring data to and from a standard SD card.
