Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized the application of sensor networks by increasing the distance of remote connectivity. There are many practical applications in various sectors like healthcare, industrial automation, security and agriculture etc. In almost all applications, the requirement of configuration update and in some cases gathering data requires frequent visits to field units which cost money and time.
Remote Access to Multiples Controllers (RAMC) is an integrated smart wireless controller that can be used remotely to change the configuration of deployed field units (controllers and sensors) and for monitoring their data. The system will consist of two parts: main controller and field unit. The main controller will be an Arduino based transceiver connected to PC via USB interface. The field unit will comprise of application sensors and secondary controller. The main controller will be able to connect to field units via three wireless links: Bluetooth, Lo-Ra WAN and Wi-Fi (for internet), thus adding reliability. The main controller will be able to connect up to multiple field controllers regardless of their application area. Additionally, any sensor or device connected to field controllers can be switched ON/OFF remotely.
The main objectives of the proposed system are:
• To remotely gather data from field units
• To remotely configure updates for field units
• To remotely control the devices/sensors attached to field controller
The system will comprise of a main controller and field units. Main controller will be directly connected with PC via USB interface. This module will consist of Arduino providing three wireless links LoRa WAN, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, to connect to field unit. Field units will be constructed using Arduino connected to various sensors (application dependent). The main controller will be able to connect with field units via anyone of the three-communication links for not only gathering the sensor data but also the field unit can be re-programed in case of configuration update requirement. Communication distance with Bluetooth will be ~ 5 meters while Lo-Ra WAN has ~10 Km range and Wi-Fi has ~ 300m range.
• Remote monitoring and control of field units
• Remote gathering of sensor data
• Configuration update of field units from remote location
• Reduced field visits, resulting in saving cost and time
• Redundant wireless links add reliability
• Scalable solution, connecting multiple field units regardless of application
The prototype will have three field units (Arduino circuit with sensors attached, three communication modules) and one main controller (Arduino and three communication module) connected to PC via USB interface. There will be power sources for powering up all the components. There will be motors, relays, and alarms along with multiple sensors for demonstration of different application scenarios. Arduino IDE software will be used to operate the main controller from PC, and separate power supplies will be required to power field units.
Hardware
• One main controller (Arduino, Communication modules, power supplies, motors)
• Three field units, each with three sensors attached to an Arduino)
Software
• Arduino IDE
