Reconfigurable antenna using metamaterials
Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject SummaryPROJECT SUMMARY
Due to rapid growth of wireless communication and high demand for integration of multiple wireless standards in to a single platform, it is highly desirable that the operating frequency radiation pattern and polarization of antennas can be reconfigurable. Reconfigurable antennas [1] [2] modify their operating frequency, impedance bandwidth, polarization and radiation pattern as per operating requirements of host system. They can radiate multiple patterns different frequencies [3], [4] and polarization. Obtaining desires functionality reconfigurable antenna and integration into a complete system to achieve an efficient and cost effective solution is challenging task for antenna designer.
Converting an antenna into a reconfigurable device by applying different techniques to change antenna internal structure has been challenging. Multiple factor need to be considered such as achieving good gain, good efficiency, stable radiation pattern and good impedance match throughout all antennas operation states. Reconfigurable antenna provide same functionality as that by multiple single purpose antennas. This offer saving in costs, weight, volume and repair resources.
Project Objectives- PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- Meta surface should be transmitting so that antenna radiating are not effected with metasurface is place in combination with antenna.
- X and Y polarization function differently, so that different functionality can be achieved with different polarization.
- Upon rotating, MS show change in effective permittivity due to which permittivity of overall structure changes which result tuning the resonant frequency by following equation:

- When MS is used over the space above antenna, overall thickness of antenna increase, result in increase of Bandwidth.
Techniques
Based on requirement of reconfigurable properties of antenna, there are four major reconfigurable techniques.
- Electrical reconfiguration
- Mechanical reconfiguration
- Optical reconfiguration
- Material reconfiguration
Electrical Reconfiguration
Electronic switching component such as PIN diodes, Varactor diodes, FETSs RF MEMS(Radio Frequency Micro electro mechanical System) are used in electrically reconfigurable antennas for surface current distribution by altering antenna radiating edges. For operating these switching components (DC) source and biasing circuit needed….

FIGURE 1. Anteena reconfiguration techniques
Mechanical reconfiguration
These antennas can be reconfigure by physically altering antenna radiating structural the tuning of antenna is achieved by structural modification of antenna radiating parts. This techniques does not relay on any switch mechanism biasing lines or optical fiber.
Optical reconfiguration
These antennas comes under the class of radiating elements that has the capability of changing the radiation properties with use of switches which may be optical activation of silicon switches of reactive elements.
Reconfigurable Antenna Based on Small Material
Antenna can reconfigurable through a change in substrate characteristics by using materials such as liquid crystal dielectric fluids met surface. The change in material is achieved by a change in relative electric permittivity or magnetic permeability.
Benefits of the ProjectBENEFITS:
- Reconfigurable antenna can support more than one wireless standards and deliver the same performance as that of multiple anteenas.Hence reconfigurable antennas have advantages like.
- Simple integration , low cost ,low volume, and good isolation between different wireless standards.
- Low front end processing that means no need for front end filtering and good out of band rejection.
- Best candidate for software defined radios which can adapt to new surrounding. Can the functionality as per the mission changes, act as a single element or as an array.
- Providing narrow band or wide band as per requirments.
FINAL DELIVERABLE:
A frequency reconfigurable antenna designed using metasurface to operate at certain frequency.frequency reconfigurable metasurface antenna is composed of simple circular patch antenna and metasurface with specific dimension and is implemented using planar techology.
The metasurface can be placed above the patch antenna act like a superstrate makin the frequency reconfigurable metasurface antenna more compact and low profile.metasurface is placed periodically in vertical and horizantal directions.By using the metasurface ,operating frequency or bandwidth of antenna can be tuned.MS superstrate change the effective permittivity of whole antenna structure, due to which antenna will be able to tune the functionality as metasurface will rotate.
