Customer especially industries have to maintain power factor above certain limit otherwise they will be subjected to additional charges.

Due to low power factor, current drawn also increases due to which conductor size requirement and copper losses also increase.

So a propoer system is required to deal the issue of power factor to reduce power losses and also decrease the overall cost of electricity.

So, in this project, a FACT devicess based power factor correction method is proposed, which will be capable to handel both inductive and capacitive loads. 

Such system is must need for industries, homes and even in grid stations to handel transmission line losses such as ferranti effect.

Project Objectives

The fundamental goal of this research is to use Flexible AC Transmission System Devices to adjust for reactive power. We have selected the STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) and the SVC (Static Virtual Compensator) out of several FACTS devices (Source Voltage Converter). Since these two strategies for adjusting reactive power are the most recent and efficient methods of reactive power compensation.

1) To use STATCOM and SVC to adjust for reactive power in single phase AC systems.

2) To design a working hardware based prototype of system capable to compensate reactive power under different load conditions.

3) To maintain power factor near unity, resulting in reduced electricity consumption and will also reduce copper losses.

4) Provide clean and environmental friendly electricity to user by reducing transmission line losses and heat losses

Project Implementation Method

1) First detail study of exisiting power factor improvement methods will be done.

2) Then we will propose FACT devices based  power factor improvement method

3) Then detailed simulation and analysis will be carried out using simulink based models

4) FInally, hardware implementation of proposed model will be done using required hardware components, and results will be compared with already exisiting methods

Benefits of the Project

Some of the benifits of this project are discussed below.

Power factor of the industry will be maintain near unity, which will reduce electricity consumption and will also reduce copper losses. More thickier conductor requirement will no longer be required for transmission line, reducing the overall cost of the system. Reduce heat losses will also be benificial for environement and will also reduce additional maintainance cost. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final deliverable of project is a complete hardware system which can be attached in an industry or home for power factor correction.

Design system will have the capability to compensate both reactive and capacitive loads and maintain power factor near unity.
