Electric Energy is a vital resource in everyday life and a backbone to the industry. Being limited its proper use and measurement is very important. Restructuring of power system, penetration of distributed generation and power theft are going to be the key challenges in the near future. The operational information will be crucial for the functioning of the power distribution networks. One of the information sources is going to be the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Smart meter is an advanced energy meter that measures electrical energy consumption and provides additional information as compared to a conventional energy meter and with the help of Smart Meter we can switch on and off the home appliances with a mobile application. It aims to improve the reliability, quality and security of supply. Meters were structured with prepaid appropriation framework. Structure of which utilizes virtual instrument programming design that should be possible on web server that will works with internet of things. With help of Smart meter & Mobile Application .We can see our meter reading and can On & Off any Home Appliance.

Project Objectives

  1. An aim is to build a IOT based smart meter with configuration of real time data view on web server i.e., Voltage, Current, power consumption, bill and units consumed by the user.
  2. This meter also has extra feature, to reduce the bill by shutting down the higher power consumption load on peak hours and controlling the loads by user’s need.
  3. An objective is to design a IOT based smart meter with load control implementation. Smart meter is gathering information of a user like voltage, current from sensors & then calculate the power units, load control name shows that it will control the load according to users need via web server.
  4. An extra feature is that it will shut off the max power consuming load.

Project Implementation Method

Phase-I

In the first stage of the research, we have to perform a literature review related to Smart Meters. The data which is measured using Smart Meters is obtained from an energy provider. The results which are obtained from data are plotted in the form of graphs and observations are done regarding the consumption, price-cost, cumulative cost of the household, and further statistical analysis. Particularly, in this stage, the 14 results are statistically summarized from the arrived data.

Phase-II

In the second stage of the research, a prediction model is selected. Model matching should be done after model selection, which is followed by validation. Different household energy consumption and cost patterns can be modeled using ARIMA. Various data sets are processed to obtain price-consumption correlations for observing the behavior of households using superposition.

Phase-III

In the third stage of research, a method of flattening consumption patterns is identified and developed, aiming at flattening daily patterns and attempting to change the attitude of consumers. Finally, conclusions are drawn from the analysis.

Phase-IV

Read the prepaid tag for the purpose of payment. Devices will be initialized after refill.

Phase-V

Respond to the web-links and operate the devices if need to operate. Energy consumption will be displayed web portal with the pre-defined program used in the controller.

Benefits of the Project

Smart Meters help modernize the power grid by providing the ability to remotely monitor and transfer energy consumption and power quality information more frequently and reliably. This allows utilities to work both behind the scenes and with their customers to manage the distribution network more efficiently. By collecting real-time energy consumption information, Smart Metering infrastructures empower suppliers.

  1. Reduce operating expenses by managing manual operations (meter reading, service disconnection) remotely.
  2. The Smart meter device generates various alerts and sends on user cell phone by using GSM communication mechanism when it found high electricity usage.
  3. Improve forecasting and smooth-power consumption.
  4. Reduce energy theft (a serious problem in some markets).
  5. Simplify micro-generation monitoring and track power generated as well as consumed.
  6. You will get a smart meter installed; you'll get a smart electricity meter an In-home display (IHD). These elements will talk to each other wirelessly. Electricity smart meters are connected to the mains, and monitor how much power you're using in real time. Smart Metering also benefits end customers in the form of energy savings, improved service reliability and improved customer service and responsiveness. To make all of these benefits a reality, however, utilities need a secure and flexible two-way communications infrastructure to connect and communicate with Smart Meters.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Software Requirements:

Smart Meter will increasingly demand more and more reliable network-based structures, requiring redundant, real-time architectures. These project brings new and advance technology by which we can monitor the voltage and can switch on/off Just by using the mobile application.

Hardware Requirement:

The project is initially using some of the hardware as will communicate with the smart meter using a Raspberry Pi 3. The embedded software in Raspberry Pi will itself communicate with the Smart Meter using an Arduino Uno. The Arduino Uno will run the Smart Meter and with the help of mobile application we can monitor the voltage and can control all the appliance which are connected with smart meter.

System Constraints:

The most important constrain will be value of human life giving it highest priority the system should leave every other function if sees a human life in danger. Smart Meter also save human life from short circuits and electricity thief.
