Power Mixing
The project demonstrates the implementation of an active power-mix control of a hybrid energy storage system using a bidirectional converter with average current mode control (ACMC) for a four-switch buck-boost converter. The control algorithm is implemented as a reconfigurable firmware based on Microchip dsPIC33 device. The firmware implements the active power-mix using ACMC to regulate the output voltage and current. The converter input voltage range is 8V to 18V, and the output voltage range is 5V to 20V. It can run up to 40W and 2A with active power-mix. The prototype demonstrates a scale-down vision for a 14 V and 2 A output.
The solution that we propose for a hybrid energy storage system consist of lead-acid batteries, supercapacitor battery bank and a bidirectional DC-DC converter which will ultimately drive an inverter or a motor driver. The storage system can supply high energy demand in terms of Amperes required by the load without compromising the reduction in storage capacity and endurance. During high discharge rate supercapacitors supply major current while a minor current is drawn out of lead-acid battery. When the system is running under nominal load, major current is supplied by lead-acid battery which also charges the supercapacitor for the next high discharge cycle. The system will be fully programmable (not an ASIC solution) and all converter parameters could be adjusted according to the application.

The key advantages of a hybrid energy storage system are low cost, long life cycle, fast charge and discharge rate, higher energy- and power-density which makes it very attractive and feasible for renewable energy sources and electric vehicles. Researches around the world have realized the benefits of such hybrid systems and similar initiatives have already been taken such as by BOS Balance of Storage Systems AG, Germany.
The ESD-hybrids that technically lie between conventional graphene supercapacitor and lithium-ion phosphate batteries are being developed and lot of research is being conducted for such promising energy storage devices, the projected cost of such systems is still too high
