While some methods used are not harmful for the environment they don’t generate enough power as compared to their counterpart. As the population of the world increase the demand for power is growing day by day according to the IEA “global electricity demand grows at @2.1 per year to 2040”. As the population grows the number of cars, trucks and other vehicles also grows in this project we intend to use the kinetic energy and the weight of the car to generate electrical energy which would be used to power street lights in different locations such as toll plazas, parking lots, community’s entrances and many other places. The power generated in the mourning would be stored in batteries which would be used in night when there are fewer cars present on the road. This method will generate power using rack and pinion mechanism which works with the help of high tension springs to turn generate electricity. This project provides method to generate cost effective power without producing any extra pollution and it will also remove some load from the power plants and in remote areas such as toll plaza which are located outside the cities providing power is usually expensive using this method is way more economical and easy.
Project ObjectivesAs Pakistan is a developing country. It has a lot of potential to absorb new technologies. Pakistan also does meet its electrical requirements. If electricity is generated on the road for street lights, then it will be used on the spot and power from grid can be used for the other purposes. This project is efficient enough to grab the attention of government sectors to install it on many places as it is one time investment and does not require frequent maintenance.
Project Implementation MethodSpeed Breakers Generating Electrical Power (SBGEP) uses the kinetic energy (from the velocity of the car) the potential energy (horizontal force applied by the car) to move the generator to produce electrical energy. This method is also pollution free as no fuel is required to power it and it is also everlasting as long as there are vehicles on the road making this a type of renewable source such as solar, wind and tidal without having their drawback it does not require sun, wind or waves to work all it requires is vehicles which are plenty so if it is placed in right place it could provide power to many street lights.
A rack is fixed below the upper part of the speed breaker which is in constant with pinion. The rotation of pinion activates the rotation of a gears which increases the rpm which allows the easy working of motor. A dc motor is the last stop of the extracted energy after which it becomes direct current ,hence the motor will generate electricity whenever a vehicle passes over the bump.
A rectangular bar consisting of teeth on both side that mesh with a small circular gear is known as the rack and pinion. A pinion can have teeth that are straight or helical that mesh with those inclined to the axis of the pinion-shaft. When the pinion moves about a fixed axis, the rack translates by moving in a straight path.
Whenever a vehicle passes over the bump, a lot of force is exerted which is wasted . This wasted energy can be used if we can place a device which can convert some mechanical energy in electrical energy efficiently. The input of this machine is from the movement of motor that is generated when a vehicle passes over the breaker.Below the bump, a rack is fixed rigidly which is in constant mesh with a pinion. The pinion is fixed on a shaft with another spur gear with multiple no. of teeth, to increase the rpm.The motor pinion is in mesh with the bigger spur gear on the adjacent shaft to further increase the rpm at the motor pinion.
Benefits of the ProjectThe concentration of the report is based on the designing and construction of speed breaker mechanism for Power generation. The goal here is to harness the mechanical energy spent in ascending and descending of a vehicle on a speed breaker, to generate electrical energy. Mechanical structure includes the rack and pinion system to convert linear motion into rotatory motion and driving gears for the alternator (generator). Shock absorbent springs are used to absorb sudden heavy shocks, springs are placed between the platform and base of the mechanism. The driving rack is also attached to the movable platform, rack is then connected to the shaft through the spur gears. The gears are attached to the shaft through catcher bearings, which allows them to move only in one direction. Spinning shafts will provide the necessary rpm to drive the alternator which will eventually produce electricity.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableAs per our final deliverable,our project would be in working condition.Its rack and pinion system will efficiently convert the potential energy into multiples rpms and the electrical compartment will generate electricity and will store in batteries.
